A.k.a., 'the Rock with Wings'. Or as it's said in the Navajo Nation, Tsé Bitʼaʼí.

Now that would be the best photo I've seen of Shiprock. Kind of out of your neighborhood aren't you?

That's a beautiful view of Shiprock! Did you have to get a permit to be where you were, or do your connections allow you to be there?

Did I need a permit? No. There are 2-track 'roads' on both the eastern and western sides of the volcanic dike that lead to 'the Rock' itself, and this view was shot along the east side track the short distance I went before it became wet and muddy, probably less than a hundred yards north off the road (Indian Service Rte 13) that connects NM Hwy 93 and the little Navajo community of Red Valley, just over the NM/Az state line. Had a 'connection' --a Navajo gentleman I'd met some 35 years ago at pretty much the same place as where I shot this shot-- in Red Valley, but he and the others of his generation I got to know back then have all passed.

Good info. The few times I've been there, I was in someone else's car, and they are opposed to those wonderful dirt roads! Also, we assumed we needed a permit. Next time I'll take my truck and go! I really like your view of that magnificent rock!

Beautiful. I would like to see more of the area if you have them.

I suppose Shiprock might be a little 'out of my neighborhood', but by MWSS (the acronym for 'Mean --and I do mean MEAN-- Western State Standards') distance calculations, distances are measured in hours, not minutes) it's really not all that far away. Never have tracked the time exactly, but I can 'see' Shiprock from a 45 minute drive south of home. Granted, it's still a couple hours away from there, but out here, that's nuthin'.

What a spectacular rock formation and a spectacular photograph to boot. I was in Monument Valley two years ago and am very sorry I missed that area. Would love to see more in that area when you go back.

Sure, Ken. I have more of what I'd shot in that immediate area, and a few of those I'll offer here. Two are little more than variations (different vantage points/camera positions) than what I'd initially posted, and two others are from different vantage points altogether.

#1 - Similar to the initial post, just a little different as a result of changing light conditions.
#2 - Again, essentially the same as the initial post, differing only in that it includes more of the volcanic 'dike'.
#3 - From the west side of the 'dike', as conditions changed and cloud cover shifted, and virtually all of 'the Rock' became obscurred. Didn't spend much time there as a result, but I did enjoy being able to include the 'ranch' house and the Navajo family's holdings out there where there isn't a lot else to see than 'Shiprock' itself.
#4 - Shot last, looking --or actually, while driving [since all I did was lower the window of my Jeep, hold a camera in the general direction of what I was seeing] -- 180 or however many degrees opposite my earlier position along the volcanic dike while shooting 'the Rock', and shot while cruising along at however many mph I was travelling while heading back toward NM Hwy 93.

'Place' (in landscape ptfoggerfy) is important, I guess. But for my money, the time and the atmospheric conditions at that time tend to be even more important.

Anything further I might post 'from that area' will be posted in a separate posting. While I've yet to 'work' on any of those yet, there does appear to be one or two that might not be too bad.
