just bought a new Canon RF 100-400; a check of the item on the Canon website shows that the lens hood is OPTIONAL !! REALLY? ( On Amazon, the Canon hood retails for $54.95, a generic, which looks identical, is $13.95 )

Where else are they shortchanging customers ?

In an era of rampant cons, hustles, false advertising, shoddy merchandise and poor customer service, Canon is one the last companies I would accuse of "becoming cheap" or "shortchanging customers."

hasn't every lens, since the beginning of time, come with the proper lens hood packed in the box? I guess it's really just "shrinkflation"

No. Many of Nikon’s F-Mount AF and AI and AI-s lenses did not come with a lens hood.

Ah, I see what you are saying. That is especially annoying with food products.

I am not sure what the history is on this. I couldn't find an answer from searching online. Over the years some of my lenses came with hoods, some didn't. I think it may be that the more expensive the lens, the more likely that a hood is included.

LOL - OK, I was curious, so I called Canon support. Approximately 30% of their lenses include hoods.

I think you may be correct that the quality/cost of the lens is a deciding factor on if a lens hood is included.

I purchased several EF or ES-S lenses new; none of them ever came with a hood. I never had a lens hood until I switched to Pentax.

You're a victim of "inflation" and Canon didn't raise the price, they just lowered the offer, less product for the same cost.

Do you know that the lens we are talking about ever did come with a hood, and at the same price? If not, then it is false to say "Canon lowered the offer."

You want a hood? Buy an L-series. That's the only line of Canon EF / EF-S / RF lenses that include a lens hood. Been like that since 1987.

Not "short-changing", but lowering the "base price" by not including some stuff.
Many purchase solely by price.

Thanks. I thought you would have the definitive answer.

Canon's non L-series lenses are mostly wonderful. But, they're not built as rugged, nor have features like a soft bag and hood. Buying the extra hood adds to the resale value. Or, should be a feature to consider in any used offers of these lenses.
