Insurance for Photography Equipment

Here in Florida, our homeowners insurance company suddenly quit or something UPC, and the new company who took over doesn't want to cover my equipment.

So I am asking what you folks who have insurance recommend for coverage? In Florida, its a balancing act with coverage for wind, water, etc for your home, so changing companies may not be the best plan.

Thanks

I love PPA both for their content, meeting and insurance

We use USAA for both my photo gear and my wife's jewelry. They're easy to work with and reasonable.

I had my 600mm F:4 G VR and my 200-500mm F:5.6 g VR covered on my homeowners policy. When the 200-500 became stuck and was unuseable I asked my insurance company about what was the procedure. They told me it wasn't covered because it was a maintainance issue. I told them we do NOT perform maintainance on photographic lenses. It cost me $506.00 to have Nikon fix the 200-500. I cancelled the photographic portion of the policy. In shopping around for other policies I've found that this is a common practice.

I don’t qualify for USAA but I wish I did. When I needed to fix my Nikon D500 it was $350 and I didn’t submit that so I don’t know if it would have been covered.

This has been covered many many times here. I have a separate rider on my insurance that just covers my equipment. I list the item, cost, date purchased, and serial number. Any item over $4000.00 receives a special indorsement.
What I did was set up a meeting with my insurance agent, we went over many options until I found the coverage and package I was comfortable with. I suggest you do the same.

Not sure if any Insurance will cover maintenance problems. Usually Damage and Theft only

The insurance company was correct. The insurance is normally for theft and it is not a warranty! You could perhaps buy such a policy, but I would bet you wouldn't like the price. You really need to learn a bit more about insurance, and what it covers and does not cover, before you complain. What does your policy say? Have you ever read it? Best of luck.

As far as I know, none of the “insurance” policies cover normal preventative or wear related corrective maintenance.

Traumatic events, yes - not usual wear and tear, to use other words

Bill the new company that took over when UPC tanked won’t accept any riders. My jewelry is already on a separate rider. In August when this policy expires we can find a new policy that takes riders. Meanwhile unless my insurance agent can do something I will need to find something for the next 6 months and I have two Europe trips coming up.

I currently have a rider for my photo equipment and computers through State Farm but found out about Hiscox as a good alternative.

If you don’t qualify for USAA try Progressive.

I use Amica for home & auto with a rider for photo equipment. Have been happy with them overall, but have never needed to file a photography claim

Do you need to have your home owners insurance through them to be able to purchase camera and jewelry coverage?

Thx
