Last home gymnastics meet. NCSU had an exceptional showing with the second highest score in program history of 197.225!

Shot with Z9 & 70-200 f2.8. Wide open with ISO 5000 at 1/1000th.

A few from the meet. You can see all of my shots on my website: https://rickcornell.zenfolio.com/p926933884

These are really great shots. I would imagine that it is very difficult to get images that are flattering to the contestants, artistic, and technically correct all at the same time. And, you're dealing with really bad backgrounds! Your fourth image is a great example of success in all of these.

Thank you. I try to be conscious of all those points you stated. I REALLY do not like the "spread legs" shot and try to take them at a bit more of an angle than I have here. This was an exception due to the expression on her face. Being on the floor leaves me vulnerable to the bad backgrounds. People, seats, equipment and the like. However, I must confess I really enjoy the interaction with the team and coaches and the ability to move around. Thank you for your comments.

Rick these are AWESOME!! I wish mine would turn out as good as these. Next year I am going to try again. Number 5 is so amazing. I don't know how these girl's get so high off the beam with so little to land on. The girl's with the spread, don't worry that is just part of this sport. I know there are perverts out there but GOD will take care of them. I will try to make this short. When I first started shooting high school sports my first game out was a basketball game. Before the game started I took photos of the cheerleaders. These girl's are amazing at what they do. The speed, tumbles, flips etc. When I got home I started my post work. I got to the first or second flipping shots and zoomed to check focus and there it was, a spread up close. I was kinda shocked at what I was looking at. My first thought was the damn perverts would love this. Well I yelled at my wife to come and see something. She came into my office and asked what do you want me to see. I said look, she said what am I supposed to be looking at. I told her the excuse my french but the crotch shot. Said I can't be taking photos like this. She then said that is just part of what they do. Then she said if something is really showing delete it but normal shots not to worry. After that I started to looking at TV, magazines, newspapers etc. The kind of photos were published every where. And actually the very next day in the paper that we still purchased at the time there was a photo of a girl's cheerleader competition with all the girl's like that. So I now try not to worry about it anymore. I assume all photographers have same problems. Going to your Zenfolio site to have a look. Thanks BE SAFE!!

Wonderful shots here. You have captured the emotion, the drama, etc. of the meet. The wide open shots can't be avoided, this is their sport and I am sure they are use to it. The only thing you can do is change an angle here and there. Other than that I don't know. I would like others to chime in and give their opinions.

I like the beam shots. I can't imagine how hard it is to maintain focus on an event to get that "peak" action with everything that is going on all the time around you.
