02/19 NCSU Softball vs Purdue

And so it begins! Softball season has begun with a chilly evening as NCSU took on Purdue. I thought there might be enough light to use the 100-400 f4-5.6 S lens on my Z9. I would say, "just enough". At field level, the images came in dark. When shooting from the raised TV camera platform, light seemed to reflect off the field and helped lighten the images, but I definitely needed to adjust the white balance. Let's just say I am looking forward to day games!

Shot with my Z9 with the 100-400 f4-f5.6 S lens, most around 1/800, f4 at 10,000 ISO.

Some images from the game. You may see all of them on my website: https://rickcornell.zenfolio.com/p456332220

Of course the coach just HAD to drift into the picture in which I caught the ball on the bat!

Some very good action captures.
I shoot a lot of ball (base & soft) & am always interested in how revealing the close up shots are regarding proper technique. The player in #2 would be better served having her free hand out in front & underneath the glove than hiding behind it. I see a lot of that.
Always exciting to catch the tough ‘bat on the ball shot’. Well done!

Tough to shoot at night under any situations for sure. You have some nice shots here. Can the z9 handle more iso making the shutter go higher. Just asking as I don't know much about the z cameras.

Yes, it seems to be able to do so. However, light was so poor, I felt the need to drop the shutter speed. I am shooting again tomorrow night. I am considering going into shutter priority to keep it at 1/1000th or even 1/1250th and setting the max ISO at 12,500. One thing I did discover was shooting at field level I consequently getting more dark areas in the frame. I may also switch to spot metering to get the player properly exposed. When I am above field level, dark areas seem to decrease. Definitely a learning experience shooting under the lights for me!

You did well on these. Hopefully I can get a game or two of softball under my belt this year. Haven't shot softball ever, always a first! Thanks for sharing!
