Red grapes, controlling DOF

These are two focus stacked images of some red grapes to demonstrate how depth of field can easily be controlled thru use of focus stacking. The first image was done at f/11 and the second was done at f/2.8. The magnification was around 0.5X.

The wide open lens of #2 compared to f-11 of #2 demonstrates to all how effective f stop is at controlling DOF, depth of field.

If both images are stacked, couldn’t you get the same or similar depth at f/2.8 using more stacks at finer focus shifts?

Thanks Stan. I should have explained more about how these were done. The first was done at f/11 using 1mm focus increments. The second was done at f/2.8 using 0.5mm increments. Both stacks ended at the edge of the main subject. I used a manual focus rail. If I remember correctly, the first image required about 15-20 pictures and the second one required 30-some pictures. I learned early on that, for me, controlling the DOF was more important that getting everything in focus using this procedure.

Thanks Stan. I should have explained more about ho... (show quote)

Thanks for the additional info. I’ve never done focus stacking so your information is helpful.

I like it. It looks like an alternate universe with red planets.

Thanks sippyjug, that's kind of what I thought also. I am amazed at just how sharp this Tamron 90 is at f/2.8. When used to focus stack at that f stop one can have near absolute control over DOF.
