Computers based on new M1 and M2 are OUTSTANDING... My wife just received an iMac24 with the M1 and we are both amazed at the speed of this thing... I am sure the M2 with more memory and a little more speed is a monster. I am still running Sierra from a few years ago on my 27" and it's more than adequate. I can imagine a maxed out Studio would be outrageous.

I bought an M2 MacBook Air a couple of months ago, with 24GB RAM and am currently using it (as I type) with a 16GB virtual machine running Windows 11, giving an online training presentation using PowerPoint, and demoing the software my employer produces, while simultaneously using on my Mac the Brave browser (with four tabs open), mail, Zoom, Preview, the Opera browser with three tabs open, and I still have plenty of memory and a lot of oomph. Even though my command line reports 23Gb in use, Apple has extremely good memory management, so paging memory is hardly ever noticed.

Given that earlier today I was working on an eleven year-old MacBook Pro, I feel like my M2 acquisition should last me the rest of my days. With retirement coming soon, I won't be able to afford purchasing high-end products after my paycheck ceases. You can imagine, I've been updating everything I can these days.

Yes, I have the lowly Air M1, 16GB and 512GB SSD. I'm always surprised at how small and light it is. I think 95% of people can get by just fine with any standard computer. Even if you're processing images, does four seconds or fourteen seconds make that much difference in your life?

I bought an M1 Mac Mini in 2021 when the late-2012 Intel Mac Mini that I ran a business with bricked. The transition was the typically painless Apple experience of clicking Yes when the new mini found the Time Machine from the old model.

BUT - I've seen more spinning beach balls with the M1 than I saw in 10 years of the Intel box.

The old one had 16GB of RAM and a 1TB fusion drive, and I can't say the new one (with 16GB of "RAM" and 1TB of SSD "disk" equivalent) seems any faster when doing the simple edits I run in Lightroom Classic even though I upgraded the external 1TB spinning disk that held the image files for the old one to a 1TB SSD for the M1 machine (using a USB-C cable.) Apart from the fact that the old mini was at the end of its OS upgrades, I wish it hadn't died. (A refurbished 16GB/1TB Intel mac mini from 2018, the last Intel mini model, was more expensive than the M1 mini, and would have taken longer to get - if I hadn't had to fill orders every day I would have given it more serious thought.)

I’ll be in the market for one next summer. I asked a friend who is in the IT department of a large company, really a MAC guy, what upgrades I should get when I order it. His response: “everything possible!😇 I responded, “I thought you were my friend”? The way I have it configured now it’s going to cost about $5500. HMMMMM, that’s pretty hefty.

You should probably back up your data and wipe the M1 clean. Reinstall MacOS (now Ventura 13.2), then reinstall all of your applications from original, up-to-date sources. Finally, reimport your data.

The M1 is a different architecture. If you mix older Intel and M1 software components, you risk slower and unpredictable perfect issues.

I intentionally do this to my existing setups every three years, just to clean out unneeded app files and ensure maximum performance. It always speeds up my system.

16GB memory and 1TB storage is the sweet spot. Save 15% or so on the Apple Refurbished site.

Even a Mini or Air with these specs is shockingly swift for most people. But if you do 3D video graphics, edit 100MB images daily, or edit major TV shows or movies, get a high end model.

Base single core performance is the same on all M1 variants. Ditto within the M2 family. The higher level chips do have more graphics performance and better multi-core performance *for applications optimized for them*.

AVOID the very base models with 256GB storage. The I/O is slow on those. Get 512GB or more. The more memory and storage you have, the faster it runs and the longer the SSD will last.
