Inquiring minds wanna know... What does it fix? What does it add? What does it change? Who will benefit from it?

From the link posted above:

• Added [Portrait impression balance] to the photo and movie shooting menus. For more information, see Supplementary Firmware Update Manual. To view NEF (RAW) pictures taken using firmware version 1.30 or later on a computer, you will need to update NX Studio to version 1.3.1 or later and Picture Control Utility 2 to version 2.4.14 or later.
• Fixed an issue that resulted in attempts to initiate [Lock mirror up for cleaning] in the [SETUP MENU] causing the camera to display the message “Disable [Network connection] in the Bluetooth menu” and lock the mirror in the down position, preventing it being raised for cleaning, when [Enable] was selected for either of the following [SETUP MENU] items:
- [Bluetooth] > [Network connection]
- [Airplane mode]

To avoid that nonsense, just mention the link in the first post, without including it. In a later post, add the actual link.

So a feature and a bug fix... Kudos to Nikon for updating a five and a half year-old camera with even one new feature!

That is one very odd bug fix, though, and it's bizarre that it took them this long to fix it. At least they did swat it!

Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.21 to 1.30

Thanks for the post. I'm interested and got the update for my antique 850. burk photo is just showing off that he just bought an up to date, never before used mirrorless set up. Just snarky remarks than add up to nothing

I am genuinely interested in what Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm, and Olympus are doing with firmware, relative to Panasonic.

Panasonic uses updates to push significant improvements into previously released models, along with the occasional bug fix. My Lumix GH4 was updated nine times with features newly enabled or improved via firmware. Often these were features from a later model that the GH4 hardware could support. Eventually every model “hits a hardware wall,” beyond which improvements only go into later models.

The rest of the industry is slowly adopting this “release it and update or upgrade it via firmware” engineering model.

I haven’t bought a new camera since 2015. Now, I’m waiting for Lumix to put PDAF into a GH6 upgrade, as they did with the S5 Mark II. I almost bought a GH6 in December and I’m glad I didn’t make a $2200 mistake!

Thanks Tom for posting this. I just downloaded the firmware. Now I will update the D850 and give it a whole new lease on life as a backup to my mirrorless Nikon.
