For the last two days I’ve had two different people from a company called WEBROOT LLC try to send payment requests for $548.39 the first time and $579.40 the second time. I’ve never had any interaction with these people and believe that they are just scammers. I logged in to my account and canceled each request as they came in. Paypal gives you only 24 hours to dispute it and when you call the number Paypal dispute has given for contact it just clicks and goes back to dial tone. So i logged in and cancelled the requests and filed a complaint within their system. I’ve changed the password and security settings and set up 2 factor authentication. Hopefully this will fix it, if not, I’m closing that account.
My intent here is to caution others about what is going on so that they don’t get taken advantage of by these criminals.
Tis the season that breeds scams!
I wonder how they acquired your information to charge something.
Someplace where you bought something prior was compromised?
I found out yesterday my 89-year-old neighbor was scammed out of $90,000.00.
Scammers need to be burned to death, slowly.

Possibly. But i can assure you that if it gets charged again, it’s closed for good.

I did not completely understand the events as you described them. Did they make requests directly with PayPal or through your email to you? If through PayPal, then it may be time to make some real changes to your PayPal account. I am not a huge fan of PayPal but right now there are not many alternatives for transferring money electronically. All have security issues.
One other fact I learned years ago about scam emails. When email was just getting popular many years ago, scammers began sending scam emails to any email address they could come up with. Some were actually just random addresses. If you responded to them they then knew they had a valid active email address that could be used and sold. So the best defense to these was to never respond to an email that you did not know or recognized. Some people, even to this day, feel that they have to respond to each email to tell them to not send more emails or they are not interested in whatever they are pushing. Just a response gives them what they want - a valid email address.
Scam phone calls pretty much the same way. Best not to answer or allow your phone to answer automatically.

Maybe your neighbor needs a new bank.
I had to transfer a rather large amount of money to someone a few months ago and I had to jump through all kinds of security hoops to get it moved. My credit union required me to verify the move in several ways to make sure it was not a scam or illegal in some way.
But all are not that way. I had a coworker who had several thousand dollars taken from her bank account by her drug-addicted daughter. The daughter was not even on her account. The daughter walked into the small town bank and told the teller that she wanted the money and that her mother had OK'd it. They gave her the money, no questions asked. My coworker never realized it until several weeks later when she was looking over her accounts and noticed a $15,000 shortage in her account. By then the money was long gone. The bank did nothing, they considered it to be a "family issue".

She did it voluntarily.
And I made a terrible mistake.
It was $9,000.00.
The first thing I'd do is make sure the billing came from Paypal. The last thing you want to do is open any attachments that may have come with that email.

Right. Anything like that gets deleted immediately.

Forward the original email to: spoof@paypal.com they'll investigate it. Well, they say they will.
