Life-Saving Melting

On the plus side, all the defrosting that's taking place in the north of our planet is saving lives - sort of. Scientists discovered a virus in Siberian permafrost from 48,000 years ago. As the permafrost melted, the virus was revived - brought back to life. I bet it can't wait to start infecting people - and it is capable of infecting people.

Seven types of viruses that have lain frozen in the Siberian permafrost for thousands of years have been revived. The youngest have been frozen for 27,000 years, while the oldest was on ice for 48,500 years old – making it the most ancient virus resuscitated so far. All of them remain capable of infecting cells, showing that ancient viruses emerging from melting permafrost could be a threat to the health of plants and animals including humans.

Still, I wouldn't build a house near the coast.

It’s probable that those aren’t human viruses, since there were few if any humans living near there at those times. If it is an infectious human virus, we might very likely have an immune response built in.
If not, or if it is capable of infecting an animal we live with and jumping from that animal to humans as COVID did, then we might have found the answer to human overpopulation.
So, good news all around, right?

Sold our condo at the coast a couple of years ago (after the parking lot started flooding for the first time in 40 years).
