I've read often that a TC on a zoom lens is not ideal so I did some experimenting. I have a new Nikon 7ii, a Nikon 100-400mm and a 2x TC. Set the camera in DX mode so the effective results with TC at a native 100mm is 300mm. Then set lens to 400mm native for a net results of 1200mm. First shot at 300mm, f10, 1/80, ISO 64. Second shot 1200mm, f11, 1/80, ISO 64. Both handheld. Both cropped to 200ppi and processed with Topaz Denoise AI. Also did Topaz Sharpen AI but thought the results to be the same. Of course if it were a picture I wanted to hang on the wall I would use a tripod but I wanted to see what a hand held at 1200mm would look like. So now I know.
300mm
1200mm

Are you asking for some input on quality? If so I would say that both images look a bit soft. I have a Z 100-400 and use it on a Z9. I find that images can be soft if the shutter speeds fall below 400 handheld of course. I am not sure the addition of a TC helped matters.
If you want to demonstrate you success or failure, you'll post and store your example images. Rather than creating wasted space thumbnails and wasted time reading your post. If this post had any amount of seriousness, create a replay and store the images.

A TC has NEVER improved an image on it's own.
A teleconverter is much cheaper than a long lens, and it produces very good results. People don't usually magnify their images several hundred times, so a TC is basically as good as a lens. A few years ago, I posted pictures taken with and without a converter (1.4), and people couldn't tell the difference.

I don't think they look bad at all. But then it's a stationary subject. Still I think the IQ is quite good despite all the manipulation.

I agree, Jerry. Pixel peepers will find that a TC will degrade image quality to a degree, but images viewed at normal viewing distances look fine. Us shallow pocket hobbyist photogs appreciate the focal length advantage TCs give us at a reasonable expense.

"...shallow pocket hobbyist..." That is a great term! Some people order a camera as soon as it is ready for pre-order. Others wait for used and refurbs.

When I want to buy a camera model I buy it at the point in time when I can get a new one (no used, no refurbished) at the lowest price.

Another pointless argument to me - the "handheld" photos attached and viewed normally are just fine for what they are and what they represent - pixel peeping or not, viewed at normal distances they seem fine.

Looks good and plenty sharp to me. I don’t see any real softness

Maybe the intent is not to meant to improve but to maintain the quality and sharpness
Note the word "experiment" I just wanted to see the difference and check out the accuracy. No big deal, sorry some got their panties in a wad.
