ON1 Raw 2023 - Slower than Molasses and Buggy

I've downloaded a trial version of the latest update and am so far very disappointed with it. On both my PCs, a Ryzen 5800X, 64GB RAM and an AMD RX 6600 GPU and my i7-12700, 32GB RAM and AMD RX6650XT (admittedly not the best GPUs for content creation) RAW 2023 is lethargic to say the least when cataloging folders, selecting images for edit and other operations. It also crashes for no apparent reason from time to time.

I'm wondering if others are experiencing problems with the software.

I'm also not impressed with the tools organization and workflow: switching modes (edit, browse, cataloging, etc.) but I am new to ON1 so that may be more a matter of getting to know the software better. Either way, the workflow is much different then programs like Lightroom, Photoshop and Affinity photo, all which I use almost daily as a real estate and event photographer.

I really want to like the program as it has some features that I think I could use to good effect but I can't justify it as it is.

They are very good at updating and fixing bugs. An update just came out a few days ago.

Hmm. I have ON1 Photo RAW 2022 on two Macs, and I just now opened it, navigated to several photo folder, opened them and ran an AI Match on a photo, all on an Intel-based (3.5 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7), 16GB RAM, Intel Iris Plus Graphics 650 1536 MB Graphics Card Mac running macOS 13.0.1 (Ventura).

I know this is an apples-to-oranges comparison (no pun intended), but I wonder if there isn't something else going on with your computer?

Oh, I just noticed you're speaking of ON1 Photo RAW 2023! I wasn't even aware it was available. I'll have to look into it.

I am using the latest upgrade (free) to 2023. My processor is only mid-range, as also my NVIDIA GPU (w/4 GB RAM). My C: drive is a 500 GB SSD, my data drive a spinner and I have 32 GB of RAM (though nothing ever has used more than a quarter of that - by real time monitoring). I NEVER have had any kind of problem with ON1, and it always does everything fast - much faster than one would expect!!! The workflow is quite simple and straightforward, the program is very easy to learn and use (and no need for plug-in use or switching programs), and the support (VERY minimal use) has been good, fast and complete. I believe ON1 is absolutely the best at everything (certainly, for me) and no other software is needed!!! I would note that the use of a GOOD GPU is an absolute necessity, performance wise.

As above, I installed ON1 Application Manager and then ON1 Photo RAW 2023 on my 2020 M1 MacBook Pro (16GB, macOS 13.0.1 Ventura) and I have no issues with performance at all. In fact, the AI components a lightning fast compared to Luminar NEO's. In just a short time exploring, I found right-click menus, settings previews and presets and everything worked very snappily.

I have been using ON1 for several years. My experience is that, compared to prior versions, it's very slow and buggy.

It’s your graphic cards! Runs like a charm on my M1 Mac Mini . One of the most reactive software companies in this genre. And that comes from a retired software exec with 45 yrs experience.

I started an identical chat a few days ago. With several Hoggers input, I concluded that my problem is my 8GB of RAM. Apparently the computer must have a minimum of 16 GB to manage efficiently such a robust program.

What is the “ON1Application Manager?” Is this a separate download that may help?

Also, I have used ON1 for 2 or 3 years and absolutely love the program.

I’ve been buying and using ON1 PR since 2017 and have upgraded every year including last month to the 2023 version. Yes, I’ve had issues and annoyances, especially when a mid year release in 2018 or 2019 required me to upgrade my graphics card. Speaking of which if you don’t configure your computer to have the GPU do a lot of heavy lifting while running ON1 PR, you will likely experience poor/deficient performance. There’s a help page on ON1’s website that lists recommended configuration changes to facilitate better performance. Good luck!

I don't understand what you mean when you say "configure your computer to have the GPU do a lot of the heavy lifting. Could you point me in a direction so I can figure this out? I use a MacBook Pro for my editing.

I'm on a PC desktop with an NVIDIA graphics card. I know this doesn't apply to your settings but here's what you would do if it did (for others).
Open the NVIDIA Control Panel.
In 3D Settings, select Manage 3D settings.
In the settings screen, select the "Program Settings" tab.
Under number 1. Select a program...., add the ON1 executable application (you'll have to browse the program folders to find it).
Then, under 2. Specify the settings....., select CUDA - GPYs, select the drop down menu and select "Use these GPUs" and click the box corresponding to the GPU
Click on "Apply"
Exit and "restart" the computer.

I'm not familiar with the graphics hardware configuration or settings for a MacBook Pro. However, this page may offer some assistance?

The recent upgrade to ON1 2023 fixed most of the bugs related to GPUs - initially there was an issue with NVidia cards. Make sure that you download the newest version and install it as administrator. Should fix your problem.
My first install worked fine with Nvidia GX 1080, but not with my more recent GX 3080 card. Everything worked fine after the update. the latest version of Photoshop initially had problems, but I applied the fix which 47 Greyfox describes and everything worked fine.
Make sure that you have the latest drivers for your video cards, too!
Hope you resolve the issues.
Have a great day!
