Modern cell phones contain embedded high quality cameras. Apple, Google, and Samsung control the largest share of the market, and each of them claims to be the “best”.
How do we, as consumers, know which is which?
Is there an independent, knowledgeable test site that regularly makes meaningful comparisons of the strength and weaknesses of each of the above, and possible others?

I google searched for "best cell phones 2022".

First hits included: CNET, The Verge, Tom's Guide, ZDNet and even Consumer Report.

The race between Apple, Google, and Samsung for the "best" is so tight, it probably doesn't matter.

I only use my phone for calls and drone flying. I could care less about who makes the best camera. If you want quality images buy a camera and a cheap phone. That's just me, though. Most people disagree with me.

Maybe there is an independent, knowledgeable test site that regularly makes meaningful comparisons between Canon, Nikon and Sony?

Consumer Reports do make cell phones test. They are independent and knowledgeable and they do make meaningful comparision (but you have to understand what they mean. They put a lot of weigh on the price. If the unit is good but it's expensive they don't give it high mark)
But you do have to pay in order to view their reports.

Google Pixel is the best in one category optical telephoto. When there are a great host of criteria it is most difficult to choose. I chose iPhone a long time ago so when I had questions a neighbour, a good friend and my daughter could all likely give me an answer.

A grandfather was talking to his eight-year-old granddaughter about smartphones, and she said, "Grandpa, Iphones are for girls and Androids are for boys!"

I was driving my granddaughter to high school a few years ago when I needed a new phone. I asked her advice and that is exactly what she said.

I bought a Samsung Galaxy S9 and it still works well enough that I can't find an excuse to get a newer one.

Yes but now I live in a little town and the library hardly has anything worth reading.

Helpful, but several late model ‘phones are not yet scored.
Thank you.

My "best" right now is my iPhone 10RX. It’s all about your own values.

Very helpful; lots of detail and nearly up to date with current models.
Thank you.

They’re all-in-one pocket sized computers with so many features that most of us will never get familiar with but are being marketed for their picture taking abilities. So far, flash attachments and accessory lenses are limited at best, not so with other "dedicated" cameras.
