I am an amateur photographer - Nikon user for 60 years. Currently using a Z 50 which I love.
I had been using Luminar in the past , but I recently I have read about the NikonNx studio for basic editing Any thoughts?
It'll do a good job of converting raw files but I found the clone tool very unimpressive and it doesn't have an equivalent to an adjustments brush.
For the limited PP I do NX works fine for me. I also have Adobe photoshop elements which has a better spot healing brush. I might lighten some shadows and do some cropping and for that NX is fine. I'm a JPG shooter so I don't need to or care to do much afterward.
You bought a superior software to the free software that is not better.

Right! With a new camera, not all software will be able to process those new raw files. NX works fine for that. I don't use it for processing, though.

I think it convert raw very well but yesterday since I don't have PS on this laptop I used it trying to do a crop. It does crop but when I tried to save it I still have the original image. I guess I have to learn how to use it better.

You can also adjust or remove any Picture Control settings that came from the in-camera settings (that applies to raw files only).

Good stuff Bill de....to our OP...try it see what you think!!! Like Jerry noted - free is a good thing...and you can always move on if you need to.....
NX Studio is my primary RAW data editor for Nikon files. If you are not going to print your images from RAW data using Studio NX actually makes no difference. If you shoot JPEG any editor will do a good job since the camera processed the colors already.
The Nikon software was designed to extract all the goodness in a Nikon RAW data and part of that goodness are the colors. For the best color reproduction my printer technician recommended this editor for my Nikon RAW data.
NX Studio is most probably not the best editor for RAW data, it all depends on how much editing you do. In my case it satisfies my needs and if I need further editing I convert the RAW data to a 16 bits TIFF and continue working with Affinity Photo. That has been my workflow for years and as I said I am very satisfied with the results.
I use NX Studio and DXOPL5. Most of the time I use DXOPL5 to edit my RAW files from my three Nikon bodies as DXO has many more features that I can apply and use if needed.
I use NX Studio for initial image review and culling images not worth keeping as it is very fast at rendering the image. For editing RAW files it works fine depending on what is needed. It does have control points for limited local adjustments, control points in DXO are far more powerful.
Some use NXStudio just to access Nikon Transfer, a program to download and rename your images.
