Closely contested game . D500, 70-200 2.8 shot wide open, 1/1000 SS, Auto WB, Group AF, Auto ISO. No VR for first half of game; Sport VR second half. I did not see any noticeable difference in the speed of autofocus. Post processed in Lightroom for iPad. Please critique. Still not satisfied that images are somewhat soft. What can be done to overcome this ? Raise SS to 1/1250 ?
BTW, last image is from another game. However I like the composition ! Thanks. Paul

Good captures Paul. My 70-200 captures are soft only when I shoot past the focal length of the lens and crop in a tad. I really don't see motion blur in any of your photo's. You do have some luminous noise because of the higher iso. I keep off all image stabilization on all my lens since my shutter speed is high. Again I really like this set of images you posted of the action.

Rick - thanks ! I did crop a tad on some to get rid of extraneous items. Pardon my ignorance. Please explain what shooting past the focal length of the lens means. I do not understand. Paul

From my experience and personal rule of thumb, for every 100mm of lens I can fill the frame (portrait orientation or vertical) up-to 10 yards. Of course when you rotate the camera to the landscape/horizontal orientation it's more like 15yds per 100mm of lens. When I'm shooting from the back of the end zone with my 70-200mm lens zoomed in at 200mm and camera is oriented in the horizontal/landscape position, the teams must be within the goal to 10 yard Lines to get a descent fill the frame shot. My 400mm gives me roughly 40yds of descent fill the frame coverage. That's my approach on lens focal length to approximate fill the frame coverage.

Very very nice captures!!
Your exposure and AF settings are good for the poor lighting in these night games. I use the same … but shoot at 1/800 and limit the ISO to 6400.
You may want to select the “background” mask in LR (to your taste) … then darken the exposure and shadows in it a bit. This will help separate the subject (players) from background, and hide the background noise a bit.

Paul:
Rick said it perfectly. Which brings to the game shooting tight and fill that frame on the back of the camera. Less is more. Less cropping is much better.
All in all I like the set, so much improved. Have patience my friend.
Do you use Topaz products? If you did the shots that are borderline from delete or keeper you would have more keepers for sure.

Thanks again Jules. I have not yet purchased the Topaz products. I’m looking at the Topaz AI package rather than Denoise. , Sharpen and Giga Pixel. Thoughts ?

Gee Paul I really don't know about the package. As you know I use only Topaz Denoise and Sharpening. I love the products.
You might post this question here on the ugg and see what others who have the package have to say about the subject. This photo I am now going to post I could have deleted it before applying both denoise and sharpening.

This shot needed help. I shot it at 1/1000 at 2.8 iso 10,000. Had motion blur (lights were not great) and a bunch of noise. Here is the finished product.
Hit download.

Wow Jules. That’s outstanding like making lemonade out of lemons ! I’m going to post that question.
BTW how did you achieve the almost totally black background ? It really makes the action stand out. Paul

The amazing background was just where the school was located. The stands were behind me. I have never had that before. I will be going back to the school on Sat. and I am sure a day game I am going to get regular backgrounds with stands, people, trees are back there too.

Yes Topaz has great products and improving them all the time.
