LR is an excellent program and i use it all the time in post, but I can get better noise reduction results while retaining more detail and sharpness using Topaz Denoise AI. Topaz is a game-changer for many sports and wildlife shooters, shooting in low light, and/or with high megapixel cameras at high ISOs, a recipe for more noticeable noise.

Here a shot with my 50mp Sony A1, shot at 1600 ISO, with the Sony 200-600mm f5.6-6.3 lens, 600mm, f6.3, ISO 1600, 1/2000 sec. A Great White Egret bends its neck to clean its feathers on the Caribbean Island of Sint Maarten/St. Martin. This raw file was initially processed in LR and then had its noise cleaned up with Topaz Denoise AI (used as a plug-in to LR). Much better final results than LR could do (and I have had and used LR since it first came out), without losing detail and sharpness.

First the full frame, and then a tight crop from the same image.

Then another 50mp Sony A1, Sony 200-600mm lens shot. 400mm, f6.3, ISO 1600, 1/4000 sec.(to stop all movement, including the water splash on Egret takeoff) as a Snowy Egret takes off from its watery perch on Sint Maarten/St. Martin. Topaz Denoise cleaned up the noise while retaining the image resolution, sharpness and detail from that 50mp sensor.

For this longtime pro of over 48 years in the business, Topaz Denoise is totally worth its cost. You have to learn how to balance the use of the three sliders, but it works wonderfully.

Click on download to see the detail ,resolution, sharpness and excellent Topaz Denoise A1 noise reduction in each image, even with UHH compression.

Cheers and best to you all.

When I have tried PS & LR, it seemed to take a long time and I was often poking around looking for something that made sense. With Topaz Denoise etc., I just made a few obvious clicks and in seconds, had the results I was after.

Admittedly, it is easier to have grown up with the Adobe software since 1988 and 2006...

It's like anything, though. You have to immerse yourself in it and force yourself to use it for everything until it "clicks."

Both work as plug-ins but differently. Topaz has a raw process that’s a little cumbersome on a PC but easy on the Mac, (I have a PC), that gives you a DNG. Using the regular plug-in process you can choose either a copy or a copy with LR changes and it creates a TIFF. For DXO Pure Raw instead of right-clicking and choosing from the plug-ins you click on the File menu and choose Plug-In Extras. There are no options for processing choices with DXO except choosing whether to use lens corrections or not, but it hasn’t been a problem. One option it has is where to save the resulting DNG. A tutorial suggested setting up an auto-import folder. I find it better to just save it back to the same folder and it automatically shows up in LR right next to the original.

Well, now we have had people extol the virtues of Topaz AI and others do a complete dump on it. So you can't depend on the experience of others.

There's no substitute for personal experience. Everyone has their own needs and approach to a problem. I'm in favor of the trial period (although you need to do it when you have plenty of time and no other distractions to give it your best evaluation).

When using Topaz Denoise AI the most important thing is to learn to balance the use of the three sliders:
-Remove Noise
-Enhance Sharpness
-Recover Details

If you overdo any one of them you might not like the results. But when used properly Topaz Denoise can be a game-changer IMHO, and help save many images.

Many Pros and amateurs alike swear by it, along with similar programs like DXO Pure Raw.
Topaz Denoise AI is particularly a favorite of sports and wildlife shooters.

As others have suggested, it is best to try out the trial version to see if it is for you and what you shoot.
For me personally I found I can do more with Topaz Denoise AI than with LR alone in terms of noise reduction without losing sharpness and detail. LR and PS of course do so much more in pure editing of images.

I use Topaz Denoise AI as a plug-in in LR. It can also be used as a stand alone program outside of other editing programs.

Cheers and best to you all.

I have not tried the latest iteration of AI, but the previous one was not as good as their older Denoise 6! While their product is good, it certainly is not the best available!!!
