It is the Issue! The adapter in discussion is a Viltoz EF to RF adapter with a control ring that will not function.

OK, guys I agree with a Canon purchase. But consider where a Hog has an RP and an R7 and only one EF lens. Your sympathy is a little 'High and Mighty'.

You clearly need more EF lenses.
And possibly a second adapter.

I understand...it's a comment on Canon today. It's something you will have to get used to.

I just received the Viltrox EF-R2 Adapter and found the control ring inoperative. A video chat with B&H support determined it needed a firmware update to work with the R7. I went to the Viltrox website but could not find any reference to the adapter on its product page or its download page.

This may be a result of Canon demanding Viltrox stop making RF mount products.

Or Canon knowing that these patent violations are producing sub par products that will hurt Canon's reputation for superior product excellence and support.

My Viltrox experience is certainly not of sub par products. I use them to fit EF lenses to Sony and Nikon. AF is not pure perfection like the OEM adapters, but its reliable and consistently good enough in general photography. All other functions are 100%. No one with any common sense expects more than that from a Frankenstein kit. Its a keeper.

Since I dont use Canon bodies Im not suffering from Canons new policy. But theres no need to "protect" us all from Viltrox. I also use OEM adapters, Nikon FTZ and Sony LAE, and yes those have better AF than any of my various third party "smart adapters", as expected.

I do not have the Viltrox adapter, but both Canon adapters. I had an issue where the control ring and focus would not work with the Tamron 18-400 lens. The Tamron lens was upgraded to the latest firmware. After experimenting I found out the culprit was the Canon LP-E6NH battery supplied with the R7 camera. It seems if the charge goes down to about 60%, it won't work correctly with either of the adapters. I ordered and switched to Powerextra batteries, since Canon batteries are on back order, and both work great. My suggestion is to first try a fully charged battery and see if it has any impact on it.

It's not suffering it is a matter of quality.
Read the post, the Viltrox fails to work.
Not Canon's issue it is the Viltrox problem with the sophisticated Canon system.
Remember that the EF was about 25 years ahead of the market in technology.
So it is likely that the RF is as well and Canon does not want to divulge that information.
Look at the new hot shoe with extra features lacking elsewhere as well.
All rather sophisticated, complex and advanced.

It appears to be a need for firmware update which is not currently available at the manufacturer's website. In fact, no reference at all to this adapter is anywhere on the website.

Canon said let them use it on the Nikon. Canon does sell an adapter that allows you to use EF lenses on R bodies. In your case neither Nikon nor Canon makes an adapter that allows Canon EF lenses on Nikon Z bodies so you have to go third party.

I wrote to the manufacturer and they sent me a binary file. I guess it might be the firmware, but they gave me no instructions or .exe to install it. So I wrote them again. No response. So I gave up. I called B&H and they sent me a return label and told me I'd get a refund when it arrived. I also bought the Canon adapter with control ring and it works fine.

End of story.

The best end to this type of story.

If the 3rd party products were sub-par, Canon wouldn't be worried about them.

Canon is worried because they're GOOD products... competitive with Canon's.

Canon is looking rather petty, since ALL other camera manufacturers are welcoming 3rd party participation.... And benefiting from it!
