For other destinations on and around Mount Desert Island check out the preserves run by the Maine Coast Heritage Trust, of which there are more than a dozen.

For those concerned about crowds there is the section of ANP on the mainland on the Schoodic Peninsula which has spectacular scenery and is far less crowded than the parts on Mount Desert Island. Even on MDI the portions of the park on the "Quietside," i.e., Southwest Harbor, Tremont and Bass Harbor, tend to be less crowded than the Ocean Drive part. (But watch out for the iconic Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse.)

And there is also the part on Isle au Haut, linked to the mainland only by passenger ferry from Stonington. Even I've not been there yet!
For those concerned about crowds there is the sect... (show quote)

We camped in a lean-to (reservations required) with our two young children more than twenty years ago and had a great time. I highly recommend it!

The state government had announced a major program of investment in the Maine state park system intended to improve the quality of the visitor experience. The state parks offer many, often less crowded, alternatives to Acadia.

Now that Fall has arrived, there will be many opportunities to photograph fog in and around Acadia National Park. While I often hear visitors lament foggy conditions, the mists can be a great tool for making unique images. For anyone who might be visiting Acadia now, here are two resources for photography in the fog:

Benjamin Williamson is the lead Down East Magazine photographer.

Michele Sons is a lover of fog, mist, and soft light, originally from the UK and now based in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia.

Acadia is in Zone 2 (moderate for the Indigenous Peoples Day weekend).

Acadia is now at "high" color, 50-70% of "peak."

The Cadillac Summit Road will close to all traffic, including pedestrians and bicyclists, for the season beginning November 14 for road repairs and culvert replacements. The closure will allow workers and oversized vehicles access to the historic road without endangering staff and visitors. The project’s timeline is weather dependent. The road will re-open for pedestrian use after the construction and road crews have de-mobilized for the winter.

The Sand Beach entrance station is now open all year, so a park entrance pass will be required this winter -- either an Acadia pass or one type of Federal Recreational Lands pass.

Off Season Access

Part of the Park Loop Road is open all winter (unless closed due to snow or ice). This is the section along the ocean that goes by Sand Beach and Thunder Hole, and runs from the Sand Beach entrance station to Otter Cliff Road. This section must be accessed from Schooner Head Road in Bar Harbor. You can also get to and from Jordon Pond via the Stanley Brook entrance in Seal Harbor.

Remember the Maytag repair man. I’m betting that working the freezing Sand Beach Entrance in January would be like a frozen Maytag Repair Man Job.

Hi Eric. We actually drove into the park through the entrance station a couple of times this past winter and the ranger on duty looked toasty warm in the kiosk. Of course it was on the warmer days, around 30.
