I'm having trouble understanding the difference between Auto 1 and Auto 2. What happens differently?

I just looked at it and played with the settings and I can't tell a difference either.

Maybe we are just too old to understand "Mirrorless Geek Speak"?

Appears that A1 locks out the VF when the screen is open, but A2 does not. So A1 is a new convenience, and A2 is the way most cameras have handled auto switching all along. Thaz how I read it.

That seems to be what it does, but I still don't see how it says that.

They just put it in there to make it more confusing. It's a complicated camera. LOL

I think that’s exactly what it says.

I have had a lot of Canons over the years, DSLRs and two mirrorless. The instruction booklet on the R7 is the smallest I have ever seen and does not fully address, in my mind, all of the functions. I ordered a 3rd party book which I am still waiting for. As to your question, I have no idea.

There is a 963 page manual available at Canon online for the R7. Big enough for me.

The book that comes in the box isn't the whole story. There is an Advanced User Guide available online of 963 pages.

That's how I read it too, an unnecessary convenience. If you don't want the viewfinder to come on while you use the screen, just switch to screen.

It sounds like a useful convenience to me. Most people aren’t gonna use the EVF if the screen is open and working with the screen open it’s easy to cast a shadow that would cause it to switch to EVF. And yes, you can just set it to “screen”, but that’s another setting you need to remember to set and to set back. It could make the difference in getting a shot or not.

This video is on the R5 but does explain the difference between the two AUTO modes.
I hope this helps.
