Hi there. I have heard that one should turn active D lighting off - others recommend it being on-Auto. What would you recommend??

It might be a personal choice thing.

If you use shoot RAW you dont need it and its not available.
Great option tho for jpeg if you are faced with high contrast conditions.

If you shoot raw it is available but I agree not needed. It can (setting dependent) effect your raw file by altering exposure.

Nope. Just checked my D7100 and the option is greyed out. Switch to jpeg's + RAW and its available.

Just checked my Z7 which is set to save raw only. Active D lighting is available at all levels. Maybe the difference is old/new cameras.

That violates UHH Sacred Tradition .... but Im with you 100% on that. Do it !

FWIW I leave it on all the time. And I like to leave some space on the highlite side of the histogram. No ETTR cult for me. Im very protective of my highlights. I usually do raw+jpeg, so I have some "insurance". The ETTR cult may point out that Im not *maximizing* my raw files. Thaz true but not a real-world problem.

Set it to only RAW only and then evaluate what is available.

Do you shoot JPEG or RAW? That's the determining factor.

Paul's question is pertinent. ADL is a JPEG function. If you don't want the JPEGs from the camera then it has no value -- no benefit for raw only shooters.

Its always set to just RAW. And as I say, the option for D Lighting is greyed out. As an experiment I changed it to RAW PLUS jpeg and the option was available.

The menu option should be for Active D-Lighting and not D Lighting. D Lighting is a different function.

I just looked at your camera's instruction manual and I'd draw the conclusion from what's in the manual that Active D-Lighting should work on your camera when set to raw only. It certainly does work on my Z7 when set to raw only.

So can you tell us how you can tell it is working for RAW images - display on the camera as you are taking photos?

It doesn't work for raw images -- it's a JPEG function designed to create a JPEG in high contrast light that has better highlight/shadow rendition. It can affect raw files by reducing exposure.
