I’m including 2 photos from a vacation we are on in a rental home. They are both of the same palm tree. I like the photo better from the Iphone 13 and am not really happy with the straight out of the Canon r6. If I ran the Canon photo thru Lightroom I know I can improve it. Would you do anything different with the settings?

Here’s the settings for the Canon r6 24-105, RF lens, 50mm ISO 250, f/4, 1/2500. I used landscape as the picture style in AV.

For the iPhone 13 Pro Max 37mm, iso 50, f/1.5, 1/1412.

The Canon is the first photo the second the iPhone.

I have an iphone 14 on order too. I’m thinking I’ve got this high end R6 and out of the camera the iPHone looks better. Very discouraging. I have however made some nice enlargements from a zoo visit last year with the Canon.

There are probably jpg settings in the canon that will change / improve that result. There really is no such thing as SOOC. You just need to decide what that means for you.

I know this is going to be harsh, but it's got to be said: If you don't know how to use your camera, use your phone.

Why are you shooting at f/4?
Why are you shooting at 1/2500?
Why are you shooting so fast you drive the ISO to ISO-1250?

When presenting two images for comparison, and using LR, export the two images to the same pixel dimensions.

If you want a camera image that clearly demonstrates the benefits of this expensive luxury technology, use it in a way that justifies this expensive luxury technology.

Nah, I don’t take it as being harsh my skin is thicker than that Chg_canon I’ve read enough of your posts so I know you know what you are talking about.

What f stop would would you use?
I understand ISO is high and could be lower.

What I find interesting is that in the past I’ve had great results. I think I may have watched too many You Tube videos and messed with my settings.

Tomorrow morning same time same place I’ll take more shots.

I probably would have been less harsh, if I could go back and edit, and maybe if the post included another brand compared to a phone ...

The points I could have made with less harshness:

1. Consider this view, is f/4 the best aperture to either a, blow out the background, or b, to capture a better depth of field of sharpness? The lens aperture couldn't get wider, and we end up with an ugly tree in the background that is neither softly out of focus nor in sharp focus. More depth of field in-focus would seem to be a better composition.

2. Consider this view, how fast do you need to shoot to account for any breeze / movement of the tree and bush in the foreground?

3. Consider this view, where should you place your focus to achieve sharp details? Or, where is the subject of this image? Where will / should the viewer's eyes naturally fall?

4. Given both the camera and lens are IS-enabled, how slow can you shoot at 50mm without worrying about camera shake while handholding, while also avoiding any subject movement?

5. Given the lens, what is the sharpest maximum aperture, either learned from online lens testing reviews or your own personal experience?

All the questions / considerations above are what can (will) make an interchangeable lens camera better than a phone. When I say something like "when you become one with your camera, the magic begins", I mean that all these questions are asked and answered in your mind in an instant as you view and frame any and all subjects in your viewfinder.

BTW - the ISO is a red herring in all this discussion. Although you should bias your exposure decisions toward the lowest ISO possible, there's nothing in this EOS R6 example that is 'wrong' from ISO-1250. It's just an outcome of being unnecessarily fast on the shutter.

This almost looks like the area we stayed in in Apollo Beach, FL.

While down there, I took a number of pictures on my iPhone 13Pro which I shared with a group of photographers. I did not say they were shot on an iPhone. They were rather impressed with the shots.

I think a lot about a photo depends on what you see as the photographer and how well you capture it. Sometimes people who are skilled with the equipment are not necessarily skilled at seeing the shot.

That said, I am trying to improve my skills on all my devices. As I’m getting older, a lighter camera is often easier to carry around and hold steady.

CHG_CANNON always has interesting and useful comments and photos that show he knows what he’s talking about.

We are about 160 miles south of Apollo Beach we are on Marco Island. I’m going to use the suggestions CHG_Canon made. That will be tomorrow time to go back to the pool :)

I've never owned an iPhone and probably never will.

Did you maybe consider if you had the R6 set correctly, the resulting image would be better? From what I read in your posting, you're the one who set the R6 to overexpose the image.

Originally I had not set it correctly. I'm not sure whey I did not set it correctly because I've had some great shots with the R6. Two of those shots were done at a zoo and were so good they were suitable for enlarging. Those 2 shots are now hanging in a music room in my home.
