D850–Lost Images-Operator Error?

What happened – first hour of four-hour festival shoot lost forever (50-100 images). Additionally, 237 images lost but recovered via Wondershare Recoverit. Additional 73 images produced normally. Camera, software and disk all cleared of being the cause. Always format disk in camera before shoot. Additionally, disk is uploaded via reader to remote drive unnotched.

How it may have happened? My Fn2 button is programmed to “My Menu” which the first line is format disk. When I touch Fn2 the screen defaults therefore to format disk. You can use toggle\OK or touch commands, about 3 steps to format the disk. At 6’4”, I us Black Rapid shoulder strap and from time to time when lowering or pulling the camera. I inadvertently touch one of the six buttons on the left side. This means if Fn2 is touched, format disk is now only two touches from specific selection and activation. Thousands of images and have never experienced this issue before. This is like guessing the six numbers in the lottery.

OK? Assuming you are still with me (thank you), when recovering the lost images, 1,737 images were recovered in total of which 237 were the festival shoot. The 1,737 dated from current back to April.

CONCLUSION AND QUESTION – WHEN NEW IMAGES\FILES ARE WRITTEN TO A FORMATTED DISK, THERE IS NO PREFERENCE IN TIME TO PRIOR-FORMATTED OFF IMAGES\FILES (correct)?

D850 Solution – assuming correct regarding the error, I have moved format disk to #2 position and elevated “Clean Sensor” to #1 (default view). Also other than moving shoots, such as sports and air shows, I will change bay 2 to backup from overflow.

Any other suggestions or directions are always appreciated.

I thought that is why there are 2 cards in the camera so no shots are ever lost?

It depends on how you have the second card setup, as a mirror of the first card or just as an overflow when the first card is full or as first card RAW and second JPG. Set as a Mirror is the only one that would have saved the lose in this case.

I would immediately change that Fn2 button so that it didn’t access the menu at all. Being a left eyed shooter I use mine for BBF.

I have my second card on each camera set as backup so if I inadvertently formatted the primary card all the images would still be on card 2. I agree with CamB that I would change the Fn2 button to something else and only format by going through the menu so that it is a deliberate action.

And that is why 2 cards.
The other options work just as good with 1 card.
I easily do JPEG and raw at the same time on one card and have yet to come close to filling one up.
Thus the only obvious choice and the one harped on here ad infinitum is as a backup.
Thus having 2 cards is not relevant.

I suggest moving something more innocuous to the top of your My Menu.

I don't have a D850 but my 3 Nikon bodies have a two-button format command so I don't use My Menu for format. All bodies have dual slots so when the two-buttons are pressed it pauses so you can select which card to format.

Fool resistant.

This is, by far, the wisest method for formatting a card. Leaves you in total control.

Keeping 1737 images back to April is another unrelated problem.
Download and PP after every shoot!

My suggestion: remove format disc from My Menu since it isn't used during a shoot. I don't have it on My Menu and never will.

I believe he didn’t have those saved. They were found with the recovery software. When you format the card or delete files it doesn’t actually delete the data. It just removes the index from the FAT, (File Allocation Table), which points to the location on the disk where the file is stored and it marks that space as free for new data.

With the D850 there’s absolutely reason to set a function button to format or add format to My Menu. The D850 has the simple two button format. You see two buttons with “FORMAT” in red near them, I believe on that camera it’s the Mode button and the Delete button. If you press those buttons simultaneously and release them you’ll see the number of the primary slot appear on the top LCD screen. You can use the control dial to select the other slot. Then you press the two buttons simultaneously again and the selected slot will be formatted.

The User Manual for the D850 on page 271 explains how to format a card in camera (either one if two are in the camera) with two buttons--the ISO button and the Delete button.

For me, I do it with the Setup Menu as I find this easier and safer with my Nikon bodies. Before every shoot, I check many things before using the camera. One of these is the card to see if any images are on it. The others are date and time, White Balance, exp comp, Auto ISO or ISO, card slot preferences, metering, and battery type and order.

I would never use a Function button to format a card as this is too risky for me.
