Well, I am operating my Lightroom 6.12 on my trusty Windows 7 system...but I need to upgrade. My concern is for the upgrade not to create problems for LR, or for that matter, other older programs. So, any advise on what to get or what not to get. Thanks

I have run Lr 6.14 on W10 and am currently running it on W11 with no problems. It will help if you have sufficient RAM (16GB min).

I'm more surprised that your Lightroom is still running under Windows 7, which hasn't been supported for seven years now (unless you bought extended support). What you'll need to determine is if your computer is capable of being upgraded or not. Unless you're thinking of replacing it with newer hardware. It's just a fact of life that computer software and hardware continue to "evolve" (I'm purposely avoiding using the term "improve"). Sometimes they leapfrog each other, but they always seem to reach an equilibrium. Until they don't.

If your LR software reports v6.12 rather than v6.14, this indicates you already have a problem. The software's final update was to v6.14, something you're missing, and a possible indicator you don't have the proper software installation files needed to re-install (recover) the software on a new computer / upgraded Windows computer. You should resolve this issue before moving forward, if you want to maintain LR v6 rather than moving to the subscription model.

If he has to reinstall pretty much it won't work because I don't think you can activate such an old software any more. However, you could upgrade the OS from Win7 to Win10 (I don't know about Win11) and keep the apps intact. Still I am not sure if it works.

You can activate the software by having the serial number in your Adobe profile as historically purchased software and having a 'simple' password for your email address. I mean simple as an 8-character password as the ancient LR6 software doesn't seem to pass a longer value to the 2022 Adobe.com site. I'm not going to uninstall my LR6 software to confirm the specifics, but you could install and activate LR6 software as recently as April 2021 when I needed to recover my Win10 OS on my Dell laptop, rebuilding / reinstalling all my application software just a few months ago.

LR is 6.14 rather than the 6.12 I reported...or as the young people say "I bad"

Thanks to all who responded...this helps. I will get assurances from my local computer repair/upgrade store that all will be well with an upgrade to W10 that is reported to works with my LR6.14, or a higher upgrade if assurances are there. Thanks again for your help. John

That's a positive development. Now, do you have the install file that got you to v6.14?

It is probably dumb of me to suggest it, but with so much added to Lightroom since 6.14, you should consider a gift to yourself.

I'm pretty sure it's too late to "upgrade" from Win7 to Winanything, which implies a clean install followed by installing everything you use now.

I recently updated my Win 8 to 10 and reinstalled my LR 6.14. It was seamless (except that Adobe says I have it on too many machines!)

A technical support chat via Adobe.com can easily resolve that issue.

Generally, speaking Windows is very good with backward compatibility. I have a few 20 year old programs running on Windows 10 and 11. Compatibility mode is helpful if necessary.

I was in the same boat, using PS and not Lightroom. Was running Win7 Pro and when I upgraded to Win10 I had the world of problems! My desktop was old, yes, top of the range Win7 but I had to get a new motherboard and new chip, for the C drive I went SSD. Basic a new machine excluding the power source and other disk drives. Still using my laptops for field work, one is WinXP because I have to use the firewire port on it for sound recording, and a smaller laptop with Win7Pro to down load my images from my camera in the field. As a pensioner, money is tight and our currency is not great against the US$ (US$ more or less 4x our currency) Old timers got it tough!
