Cosmetically and mechanically I would rate this lens 9 out of 10. Focus accurately on my D750. Focus ring is smooth and aperture ring is clicky. The only issue is the front element has a few visible scratches. The rear element has perhaps one very faint scratch you can only see it with a flashlight. See third picture for the scratches. It has absolutely no effect on the images.

How did you scratch front and back. Scratches don't help image either. Maybe argument for protective filters. But the back element scratch is tough to do. Please explain so we don't do it too

The “scratch” on the rear element is likely from cleaning, it is very faint and can only seen at certain angle with the help of a flashlight.
On the front element, I suspect it is from colored filters while changing them.
Like I said, it has absolutely no impact on images.
From my extensive telescope experience the worse thing you can do with optics is over cleaning. You scratch micro coatings
Thank you for sharing your extensive telescope experience. Greatly appreciated. I don’t have any precision scientific equipment to measure any effects caused by these scratches. All I have a clean Nikon 85mm 1.4g, and when compared to the 1.4D, I don’t see any discernible differences, other than the 1.4g produces slightly warmer image due to the nano coating.
I have no idea how hard Mico coatings are
