I have been shooting Canon cameras since the AE1. I am not a professional and have been brand loyal. This past week Canon told Vitrox to quit making RF lenses and Tamron has made the decision to not make any RF lenses and I suspect that Sigma will follow suit. In my opinion, this is Canon creating a monopoly. I don't like being told what I can and can buy. I have the EOS R and was waiting for the EOS R update. One reason I stayed with Canon is that I love the articulating screen. I don't want to give this up. What other cameras also have fully articulating screens?

Some Sony and Fuji models also have fully articulating screens. Check out the Sony A7IV with fully articulating screen.

There was another UHH thread on this topic and it is clear that Canon does not want anyone else selling RF lenses, including Viltrox, Samyang, Sigma and Tamron. There are still a few third-party RF lenses out there left to be bought at some dealers, but they wont get any lens firmware updates from Canon going forward.

In Canon's business model they know if they sell their R bodies for decent prices, then they know you get locked in to pay premium prices for the best RF lenses. Canon makes a greater percentage of unit profit off their expensive RF lens lineup than their R bodies.

Conversely Sony E-mount and now Nikon Z-mount have opened their lens mounts to third-party makers allowing folks with all budgets the ability to buy into their systems. It is all about the profit with Canon, not any brand loyalty.

FYI, I was a longtime pro Canon and Nikon user for over 40+ years (both brands) and then moved over to Sony mirrorless in January 2017 partly due to Canon's slow pace of innovation and partly for better performance . I have no intention of going back to Canon.

As a Sony pro shooter I enjoy all my excellent 12 native E-mount lenses from 10mm to 600mm from Sony, Sigma and Tamron, for my A7RIV, A1, A7SIII. I love having the choice to buy and use superb third-party lenses that work just as well as my best Sony lenses, but cost less, saving me more money for other gear.

Cheers and best to you.

I use my EF glass and are happy with it but I was looking for a lens in the 18-135 range so I don't have to carry my 15-30 and 24-70 with a little extra range.

An 18-135 is a cropped-sensor lens, forcing a 1.6 crop factor onto your full-frame camera. You couldn't possibly have exhausted the photographic capabilities of your 30MP full-frame mirrorless glory that is the EOS R. Look instead at the highly regarded RF 24-240 that brings IS support to your camera in a native RF zoom.

I've never understood the desire to put third-party glass on a top-of-the-line camera. I believe the Nikon D850 has an articulating screen.

The Nikon D850 has a screen that can flip up. You can use it at any angle between 0 and 90 degrees. It is not a fully articulating screen that can be used while viewing from the side. I'm looking at my camera now. That's what I see.

As for third party lenses, it is usually about price, though in a few cases the optics may be better than the optics in the equivalent OEM lens. The Sigma Art 50mm f/1.4 comes to mind, but that one will set you back a grand.

Thanks for the articulation capabilities. I’ve got two that do that but never have used that feature on either.

I don't agree with it but it is their right. I'm just glad Nikon is not as strict.

Which is one of the reasons I always carried an expandable pole with a hook on the end in the back of my truck. I no longer have the truck but I still have the pole.

I am not a professional. I have had Canon EF L glass and found that both Sigma Art series and Tamron glass in certain cases are just as good for amateurs. I don't pixel peep nor do I have the desire. I can take pretty good shots out of camera but I do some post process edits to correct some shots. I used to use LR/PS to make edits, but at 65 I don't want to spend that much time. I now use Luminar AI and Neo because I can get good results without a lot of time.

Photoshop Express is a really good compact photo editing program. It's easy to use and does a really good job and I believe it is still free. Try it out.

This is just another reason to be an evil genius and enter the dark world of Olympus/Panasonic m43. As a cult, we have secret meetings (via zoom) and may even have sacrifices of Canon and Nikon cameras to pay respect to the Mighty Eyeso, our god. The Goddess vixen, Shutterisa sits with him and bore his son, Aperturus. This, of course, all happened on Mt. Olympus.

Alas, high Eyeso is our downfall in the m43 land.

Aesop's Fables:

Driven by hunger, a fox tried to reach some grapes hanging high on the vine but was unable to, although he leaped with all his strength. As he went away, the fox remarked 'Oh, you aren't even ripe yet! I don't need any sour grapes.'

I use my Canon EF-S 18-135 and 18-200 on my R7 with a Viltrox EF to RF adapter. Works great.

I am very comfortable with the fact that my Canon bodies and all my lenses are made in Japan and not China.
