Canon's Killing off Third-Party RF Glass - Sigma & Tamron unlikely. What do you Canon R users think about this?

Samyang and Viltrox have already pulled their RF lenses after Canon told them to stop selling RF lenses.

This could cause a problem for Canon, and it might end up benefitting other camera manufacturers, especially Nikon. There are a number of current and planned 3rd party lenses available for the Z mount.

Nikon would do the same if they could. It's interesting to find out what Canon has to have that right.

That video is as much speculation as fact. It all revolves around "without Canon's approval". No mention is made as to why Canon has rescinded approval or if approval will be granted in the future. Of course, the old 'profits' bugaboo is always drug out as if that automatically explains everything. Well, it probably does for people who don't want to bother waiting for the whole story to emerge or who can't be bothered to do some research. Canon is not stupid. An outright, permanent ban on 3rd party lenses, especially Sigma and Tamron, would end up hurting sales of R series cameras. There is more to this story then what has been presented so far. Count on it.

I’ve now seen a few other “creators” including Ordinary Filmaker who have all supposedly spoken to Canon reps and have been told that Canon has no future plans to allow third party glass.

And what I’ve seen seems to be targeted mostly to Tamron which would make sense as Sony owns part of that company.

Sounds to me like Canon is as persnickety about others sharing the profits of their intellectual property as we would be if our images were being sold without our permission.

I look at it from different side.

Imagine that you cannot buy car parts anywhere except for dealer.
There would be DLM created and protesting everywhere...

I am not advocating for copying Canon software and lens design. Many third party lens suppliers do not have any communication with camera and rely on manual operation of the lens. So where intellectual property comes into play?

Where does one buy / access Nikon repair parts to perform repairs on Nikon equipment? Just asking for all the third-party shops put out of business by another company's exclusivity policies ....

Nikon's doing similar things with Z glass. Most of the 3rd party Z glass available is manual focus, specialty lenses. Some believe one of Nikon's Z lenses is made by Tamron and rebranded by Nikon, so maybe Tamron won't ever release Z glass under it's own name. At least there are some options like using an FTZ adapter or the Megadap Sony E to Nikon Z adapter. Without 3rd party competition, there is little or no pressure to keep OEM lens prices down.

I have some background in the auto repair business and can assure you that aftermarket car parts aren't produced without authorization from the OEM, including any special tooling required to make the repair. Check with any independent repair shop about their ongoing struggle to compete with dealers. For that matter dealership service departments pay dearly to maintain “authorization” to access of OEM parts, OEM tooling and OEM technology.

Everything that can be bought anywhere is proprietary just like image copyright.

Doesn't much matter to me. I have two RF mount bodies and two Viltrox adapters that work great with all my EF lens.

Don’t forget that with auto replacement parts, there are companies like Dorcy that produce parts that the manufacturers no longer produce. When I restored my ‘77 Dodge truck, I had to rely on after market for a number of items such as defroster vent hose and heater valve. Dodge no longer made those parts.

You never know, 3rd party lens manufacturers may continue to build new lenses for the Nikon F mount cameras for example.

Canon restricting to Canon Only lenses is not a good marketing move. RF camera bodies are part of the market. Selling Canon manufactured lenses for near 10x what 3rd party lenses cost stopped cold and shifts people to used their old Canon or switch camera body brands.

It angers photographers and lens manufacturers. My guess, like the propitiatory chip containing battery law suites a decade ago, eventually 3 party RF lenses will be made legally. But, canon will have lost name brand loyalty.

Canon vs 3rd party lenses quality... While the expensive Canon lenses are as said in the article, give better image quality, AI can probably correct defects resulting from 3rd party lenses to the limit of difference perception.

As is always the case people bend the story to fit their desired perception.
