Once I learned not to chase them with the camera the hit rate was about 10x's the miss rate.

Tomcat don't chase, figure the path to the food source and let them fly into frame. The shots will be sharper and your hit rate will increase. I use to chase them but it got exhausting and frustrating. I even did some with 2 flashes and high speed sync. Although that requires a bit more patience.
