Maybe a dumb question…but

I own the Nikon z50 with its 2 kit lens package (14-50mm and 50-250mm) which make wonderful images when I use them locally. I want to get one lens for travel that would make my bag light and portable, and am toying with the 18-140mm or the 24-200mm z lens. They are both full frame and the z50 is a crop sensor. Both have great reviews, but since I will be using this for travel and shooting mostly streets, architecture, people, and landscapes-typical travel stuff, I want to get the most versatility out of the lens.

I am leaning toward the 18-140 @ $600, but the 24-200 might be a better choice for the reach. It is a bit more expensive, but I am willing to spend it if it is a better option.

Thoughts?

Which would be more important to you, the extra 60 for the reach or the extra 6 for the wide?
(Aside from size and weight.)

You can always crop to get the reach but can’t do anything to get a wider field of view except move back from your subject. IMO

I believe you are incorrect. The 18-140 is a crop sensor lens. I have the Z50 with that lens and it is the best all around travel/everything lens combo on the market. The difference in weight and portability with the much larger full frame lens 24-200, would be significant.

If I were going to have one lens for travel, it would be something lighter than heavier, and something capable of reasonably wide angle work. So of those two lenses, it would be the 18-140mm.

One thing to keep in mind is that it is much more difficult to design lenses with a long zoom range than it is to design lenses with a SHORT zoom range. Most professionals will buy several 3:1 zooms before they would buy any 8:1 zoom. The 18-55 is a 3:1. The 18-140 is 8:1. The 24-200 is slightly over 8:1. Beyond about 4:1, cost and optical design compromises usually creep in to keep the cost down.

Rent to try, before you buy.

I believe the 18-140mm is a DX lens.

The 18-140 is not full frame. Both the F mount and Z versions are DX (cropped sensor) lenses.

She has a Z50, which is a DX/APS-C sensor camera, so it would work fine.

With now having the 50-250 lens you should have some idea how often (or not) you have used the long range on travels, which should help you decide.

The 20-200 was my choice to use both on my Z50 and z6II. I am very satisfied with the results I get. Worth the cost, but also watch for Nikon USA refinished sales, where you can save some $. Ken Rockwell does a great review of the lens and recommends it.

Well….two issues. First, look at the f/stops. The lower number means faster glass, better low light and higher cost but this assumes both lenes are DX or FX. Second, what are your long range plans of crop vs full frame? I started with a DX camera and all of my lens are full frame. Today, I shoot a full frame (D850) and have protected my investment.
Now, here is a solution from a different direction. Go to Flickr (free), type in the places you will be shooting and select images you like. Then scroll down and look at their settings focusing on f\stops and focal lengths. It will really help your decision in many ways.

I’ve dragged a camera with me all over the country. I’ve found that with a wide angle lens you can always crop when you get home. Image quality would deteriorate with the early low mp cameras, but I doubt that will be much of a problem with your camera. Without a wide angle, you miss things that you really wanted in the photo. Once that opportunity is gone, that’s it. I figure a poor quality image is better than no image.

On a motorcycle you have limited luggage space and there were trips where the long lens never got used while the shorter ones always are.

I use the Tamron 18-400mm Di II VC HLD with a FTZ adapter.

The 18-140 is not full frame and needs an adapter. The 24-200 is rather large but needs no adapter. The best travel option is the Sony RX100m5+ or RX10m4 ! I lean towards wider angles for travel so the 18-140 for me.

They are functionally the same lens scaled up or down for their intended format. The 18-140 is the one scaled down for your DX format camera.
