How badly scratched does a lens have to be to affect its performance?

If you can see it in an image --
Now
That's bad enough for me

For some, knowing that the scratch exists is bad enough, even if it can't be seen in an image.

A small scratch on the front element won't affect much. A small scratch on the rear element can be a disaster. You really just have to look at your pictures and decide if performance has been compromised.

A good argument for a protective filter. A filter is less expensive to replace than a lens.

That's why I use them.
They can always be removed as required for other filters.

Thanks for your replies. I was considering buying a lens with a scratch on the rear element. I think I will pass on it.

It lowers the resale value. That hurts enough, even if you can't see the issue in the images.

At least 9. Me too (but it wouldn’t have prevented a scratch on the back lens)

A scratch in the rear element is far more significant than on the front. Pass on it.

I bought a used Canon EF 100-400L II lens for $600 because it had a chipped front element. Other than that the lens was in excellent condition. After shooting dozens of test shots with the chipped lens, I concluded the chip had no ill effect on the images, none.

If it effects the final image, it is then too badly scratched. Personally, I do not own nor will I buy scratched lenses.
