Yesterday we went to Lake Tobias North of Harrisburg, PA.

As usual I took a bunch of photos and they looked pretty good on my camera monitor...

When I got home and was starting my edits about half way through the images I enlarged one to get a better look...wow there was a lot of noise in the photo...what the heck...then i noticed that the ISO was set to 10000...Yes I had been playing with the camera a while back and forgot to reset the ISO

I have heard a lot of good about Topaz denoise and sharpen...I have even downloaded the trial and found I was not very proficient at using the product...before I buy the package I would love some help from UHH to see what can be done with the photos I took yesterday...I have attached one here...any editing to this photo is welcome...

Admin, I apologize if this does not belong in this topic...

Try again with the Topaz denoise. Make a copy of the original just to be safe. Topaz is non destructive. Play around with the sliders to see the results. It is amazing.

What is your normal editing tool?

This example doesn't need "topaz" to resolve. The color is washed out. You can lower the overall exposure and / or use your 'blacks' slider to darken the colors of the image and / or add some contrast or clarity. A combination of all these typical digital editing techniques will probably deliver the best result, certainly without the need to purchase still more software.

The noise is primarily luminance, i.e., the black specs in the image when viewed at the 1:1 pixel-level details. If your tool is based on Adobe and / or similar approaches, use the ideas presented in this topic: Basics of noise processing

Noise processing will tend to soften the images details. You'll also need to consider sharpening, as discussed in topic: Basics of Lightroom Sharpening

Yesterday we went to Lake Tobias North of Harrisbu... (show quote)

The white feathers have fine detail, no blow out. 10,000 was pretty close to perfect so you would not likely need a specialized noise application. Have you tried the noise filter in whatever editor you usually use ?

How much of this is noise and how much of it is artifacts/loss contrast from shooting through glass/plastic/screen door?

Don't overlook the mask feature of DeNoise to remove some of that distortion along the top of the photo as well in the corn just below the bird's beak. If the original photo is RAW, start over and either erase or reduce the impacts of those distortion areas. They draw one's eye away from the subject - the bird.

An example of 2 mins work in ACR with standard noise reduction and some localised contrast/sharpening in PS.

There seems to be a tendency for overcooking and adding artifacts with Topaz these days. That is not to say Topaz Denoise/sharpen can not be used effectively in the right hands.

Chuck, the topaz tools do a great job of recreating details that aren't there in the image. Some of the other examples are probably better than this edit. But here, as a DNG from LR6, you can see about 4-minutes effort. Just detach the DNG, place to the same folder as the original and import to your LRCAT. It will not overwrite, being a different file type. But, you can see all my LR edits via the DNG import.

Also the JPEG version is attached.
