Nice Half Case

This is a nice little half case, but for $49.00, I'll have to give it some thought. It comes with a strap, so I wouldn't have to buy one, and it has an aluminum baseplate with access to the battery and a 1/4 x 20 screw hole for a tripod plate. When cameras came with cases in the old days, I seldom had the top half on. From Amazon.

The same company has a grip for $40. You'll notice that it comes with an "Anti-off Pin." If I got the grip, I'd also have to buy a leather strap. It looks like the one I had ordered isn't available. It should have been delivered two days ago, but they're talking about giving me a refund. I'm leaning toward the grip, but not right away.

I like them both. A half case that would fit around the grip?

Both items are made by SmallRig. You cannot use the grip and the case at the same time. One or the other.

That is a nice case, but the grip might be more useful.

You may be aware that you can't use the case and the grip at the same time but just in case I wanted to mention it. Second, the strap for that case is short. It is intended as a neck strap only. I want to mention it in case you were hoping it was shoulder strap or a crossbody strap length.

I've had my Z fc for a year. The SmallRig grip you mention has been attached to it for most of that time. I haven't taken it off since I got it. Don't expect a grip as deep as one you'll find out a DSLR, but it does make a very significant improvement in handling.

It is beautifully designed and manufactured, and the bottom metal plate is thick and solid with outstanding machining. It attaches so well to the Z fc that it almost looks like part of the original camera design rather than add-on. In my opinion the grip does not detract at all from the retro aesthetic of this camera.

The bottom provides easy access to your battery and SD card. It has a built-in Arco Swiss plate for tripod mounting, and an additional slot for other attachments. It attaches securely and snuggly to the tripod mount using a hand turned screw, but it provides an additional tripod mount on the bottom and the side of the grip as well as the Arco Swiss plate.

In almost a year of almost daily use, the tripod mount attachment screw has not loosened at all, although I do periodically check it. There are also two allen bolts underneath the bottom of the rubber grip itself which can be tightened and, in my experience, can pull the rubber grip tighter to the side of the camera. It normally shouldn't be necessary to do that, but the option is there. They do not provide an allen wrench or document the purpose of those screws but it is a common size wrench and I actually had a few in my toolbox which worked perfectly. Tightening the screws a small bit seemed to make the grip feel slightly snugger to the side of the camera..

There are a number of very positive reviews of the SmallRig grip online. There are also a few alternative grips available, but to the best of my knowledge all of them are black on the bottom and cover the brushed chrome colored bottom section of this camera. The competing grips, including Nikon's own, do not seem to have all the functionality that this grip provides. At $40, I think the SmallRig Z fc grip is a bargain and I never regretted purchasing it for a moment

I agree, but it's nice to have a choice to go either way.

That's what I'm thinking, but do I need it or just think it would be nice to have? : )

Until I got a D90, none of my cameras had that built-in wrap-around grip, and I seemed to do okay.

One thing I like about the Zfc that it has no grip. I hold the camera with the left hand. There is no need to grip the camera with the right hand.

I prefer the grip over the case. I am so used to having a grip that using a camera without one feels foreign to me. It was also one of the reasons I selected the Z50 over the Zfc, other than the great deal that included the 16-50mm lens in the kit. I hope you have found time to enjoy using your new Zfc.

I have this half leather case on my Df, it feels very comfortable in my hand.

That flap at the bottom is clever.

Yes it is, I don't have to remove the case while I need to change the battery or remove the memory card, even when I use the tripod. The case was well made with high grade of leather. It has never left my camera.

The ZFc is on my list, most likely end of Aug. So hearing recommendations for acc. is of interest to me. I have a Fuji with a leather case. Love the look.

The leather case looks great on the Df and it has a built in grip covered by the leather case. The Zfc does not have a grip built in.
