From a live Carnegie Hall concert (1981) with Count Basie.
(8 minute video)

note: I saw Tony and his daughter at NJ Performing Arts Center when he was 90, still singing pretty well. An amazing guy!! I was 14 when his first big hit, "Because of You", hit the charts and air ways in 51'. I immediately went out and bought the 45 disc. Did you know he is a WWII vet? One of a kind. First saw him in the ‘50s then again in the first concert with Gaga.
Incredible performers

I was born towards the end of '50, so I know of him from someone who used to play his LPs regularly. I seem to remember "San Francisco" as being a signature song.

Been listening since 1951, but I've only seen him live, once.

Here's one I'm sure you guys never knew. Tony was an avid tennis player. He played every Friday at my tennis club here in NY. After playing he would sit in the lounge and have a friendly schmooze with the members. Very enjoyable moments for me.

Mark I recently found a cd w/Tony & Lady Gaga. Pretty fair music, although I prefer his earlier recordings.
Still enjoy your knowledge and efforts. Thx

That must have been enjoyable. Giant show biz stars have lives too!
Thanks,
Mark

Did you see him when he did his last concert with Gaga, I believe it was in NYC within the last year? It was broadcast on TV. Although his Alzheimer’s has had its effects, he recognized Gaga and performed, hitting his notes and remembering the lyrics. Actually brought a tear to my eyes. Great talent.

No I did not see that. Alzheimer’s is a terrible disease. My maternal grandmother suffered with it.

Thanks,
Mark

What a great voice!! I saw Tony at the McFarlin Auditorium on the campus of S.M.U. I also saw B.B.King there. B.B. could have used Tony's sound system, which was perfect.

The mistake I made was not going to see Ella back in the 70's or early 80's when she would come to the Fairmont in downtown Dallas. It might have cost a buck to two, but it would have been well worth the price.

I was fortunate to live in NJ, an hour outside of NYC. Almost no limit to live music. In Asbury Park, NJ, bigs bands appeared weekly at Convention Hall. I was lucky to grow up and live in the area for most of my life. Still there!
