We are planning a September trip to Maine and would like suggestions as to where to visit on the coast in addition to Bar Harbor.
Thanks in advance for your responses!

A lot depends on what you want to see...

Hopefully you'll be all over Acadia and Mount Desert Island.
Schoodic Peninsula (Winter Harbor area) is another nice place. Chase's restaurant has good food.
One year we drove from Bar Harbor up to Lubec and had lunch (Michael's I believe), nice drive (≈2.5 hrs.) and Lubec is an interesting coastal town.
Another is Fort Knox and the Penobscot Narrows Observatory (in the western bridge support) in Bucksport on US-1.
Another year we hit about six lighthouses. You can see the list of them all here:

There was a time when I could've pointed out several bazillion very specific places a photog would want to get to up and down the coast of Maine. Some were (overly) well known and iconic, others were less universally known but seminal all the same, and the best --the crème de la crème-- were secrets I and some locals kept, however much they'd be right in your face and obvious if you were lost or lucky enough to pass nearby at Christmas Cove when the fog was rolling in. That was a long time ago, though; I haven't been back to Maine since 2016, and even then, 25+ years had elapsed between the decades I knew Maine well and the time of that return, so anything I'd suggest now could've crumbled into dust or been replaced by a complex of condos, or anything in between.

The one place YOU DO NOT WANT TO GO, however, is Monhegan Island. Which is lucky for you since now, in August, you'd be hard pressed to secure accommodations for any time in September on that horrible little nightmare of an island. And if you went at all, you'd want to spend at least a week rather than anything less, which makes your (lack of) timing and pre-planning all the more fortuitous since, luckily, you won't be going to Monhegan anyhow.

Wish I could be of better help. Especially since I saw recently on-line that the Olson house on Hathorne Point --see Andrew Wyeth's painting, 'Christina's World'-- is not offering tours for the foreseeable future (even though I imagine you could still stroll the grounds outside where the ghost of Christina might still be seen). Wish I could likewise be of better help by suggesting you postpone your trip until October or November, because then there'd be fewer tourists to muck up your plans. But I guess I can't. Or can I....?

It's out of the way but within reach of Bar Harbor - Deer Isle/Stonington.

Camden - dine at Peter Ott’s. Owl’s Head Transportation Museum. Lobster rolls almost anywhere but Red’s in Wiscasset along 1 going to Midcoast Maine is extra good. Check out list of lighthouses and seek out a few - my favorite is Pemaquid but a little remote. Portland Harbor is among most photographed but best from the water. Belfast - Nautilus restaurant is on the water and good. Oddball choice - stop at Flatbread in Rockport for good pizza and great show of it being made.

On your way to Acadia, you might check out Boothbay Harbor which has the Maine Botanical Gardens in addition to coastal harbor views. A little further up the coast, Camden offers a quintessential harbor that is beautifully viewed from a quick ride up Mount Battie overlooking the harbor. There are, of course, dozens of light houses with Pemiquid Point being my favorite and not as often-photographed as Portland's.

Wait until peak leaf season, 2nd week of October, and then include the Pumpkinfest in Damariscotta.

On Southwest Harbor, just outside of Bar Harbor, there is Echo Lake for fabulous fall foliage with beautiful reflections. Just up the road from Echo Lake is Long Pond with equally beautiful fall landscape opportunities.

For some off-the-beaten-path locations look at some of the privately managed preserves, like Tidal Falls near Acadia, but there are many others.

https://frenchmanbay.org/preserve/tidal-falls/

https://www.mcht.org/

Also the state park system is always a good choice, esp. Owls Head and West Quoddy.

https://www.maine.gov/dacf/parks/about/state_parks.shtml

Finally, Baxter State Park and Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument.

Here is a link to the Maine fall foliage guide:

It all depends on how long you have and how far afield you want to go.

September is a great time to head to Maine! The later in September the closer you'll get to some fall foliage, especially around Boothbay Harbor region. If you go there, take one of the lighthouse cruises, Kennebec River cruise my fav, by Captain Fish's Cruises.
Head up north and you'll find lots of roads that head down to peninsulas along the rocky coast. Damariscotta region, check out Pemaquid Point lighthouse with the most unique rock formations (see image below). If you head to the rocky coast for lighthouses, crashing waves sometimes an hour before and hour after high tide, but especially after a storm has gone out to sea.
Some of the best coastal "normal" food you'll find are off the main tourist areas, like general stores where they are mostly privately owned and the owner's take their recipe's seriously, including best lobster rolls (never ask for hot lobster on a roll, always cold).
Get out to one of the islands by taking the Maine State ferry, no frills, or screaming babies as on a tour boat, and they're cheap.
If you have a few hours, go sailing or windjamming on an authentic schooner, out of Portland, Rockland, Camden, or even bar Harbor among other destinations.
I created a lighthouse tourism website (always a work in progress) with attractions nearby if you want to get some info at https://www.nelights.com/exploring/exploring.html
Also wrote a couple more in-depth lighthouse tourism books that might be useful.
https://www.nelights.com/about/lighthouse-books.html
Hope this helps and enjoy your journey!

What’s wrong with Monhegan Island? We had a great trip there. Just curious as to your thoughts.
