Just got a 60d, sitting here going over manual and camera. Can any of you 60d shooters recommend any books to supplement the manual. While the manual is ok, there has to be something better. Thanks for any help that may be offered. Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Yes! David Busch's Canon EOS 60D: Digital SLR Photography
ISBN: 978-1-4354-5938-0
It is comprehensive, a good read, well-illustrated. I heartily recommend it. Worth the bucks for making this camera sing.

Thanks, I was looking at that on amazon. Looks really helpful. Did you find the manual that came with camera just not helpful enough? Lived many years in the wSyracuse area then moved south with job, miss the snow! Thanks again.

The manual has it all, I guess, but it is just a skeleton compared to this book. It will take a long time to get through the whole book, but, of course, I cherry pick what I am desperate to know at the moment. The section on off camera flash is extremely helpful and up-to-date with the current Canon line of flashes. Mine is the 430 series and each model is addressed separately. I cannot recommend this highly enough as the a tremendous resource.
My camera is MQ in Syracuse - skilled and knowledgable staff there and good deals. I moved to Syracuse for a job about twenty years ago, but grew up in Michigan and lived in the Rochester area, schooled at SUNY Albany -- so I am a transplant and enjoy the area a lot. Last year we were almost bare of snow and, yes, I miss it when it is not a few feet deep most of the winter! Of course, the city is expert at snow removal, so it is not an issue. I recall storms with a few feet and within hours, folks are out. It helps to live on a fire-engine emergency run street. ;-)

Isn't that always the way. If a company spent a few thousand dollars on writers, they could advertise that their manuals are actually usable. For many of my electronics, I write my own directions for complicated adjustments and settings.

Another trend I don't like in manuals - or anywhere - is having very small gray text. I've even seen websites like that.

It amazes me, too, that the very best documentation does not come with the camera! However, we might consider that there are some menu language irregularities due to the "lost in translation" factor already. And, good technical writing is a art in itself. For computer stuff, I like the way the Missing Manual series is made... clear, easy to follow directions, thorough for the application.

All said, I am loving my 60D and enjoying it even more because of the book. However, I do carry the original little instruction booklet in my pack AND my little Cheat Sheet booklet with favorite settings. This does not come naturally for me and I need all the help I can get. Luckily, I love this stuff!

Will try this batch soon. YouTube is like so many other sites with searches: the order of the words yields a different set of results sometimes - kind of messy Boolean. I bookmarked the results from your terms and will be happily spending some hours there. THEN, I have to remind myself that the next step to to hightail it out there and click a few!

I would have, and incidentally did, go to a site like Amazon first, and bring up after market books on the Canon 60D. Lots of them out there. I even found several at my public library. I bought: David Busch's Canon EOS 60D, Course Technology, 2011. $29.99. There is also a similarly excellent book on the 60D in the Dummies series of books.

You will also find on Amazon, a plastic laminated 8 1/2 x 11, foldable cheat sheat for about $10.00, which, for me, is a must to have for any camera.

Hope this helps.

Ditto this! I own a 60D and David Busch's manual made a total connection for me... and I still refer to it just for refresher purposes.

I don't a 60D either but you can be sure there are thing on the camera that are not mentioned in the book.

for example, I learned just the other day by piddling around that while recording video the ISO is automatic of course. But if while recording you press the ISO button just behind the shutter release, that locks the ISO to what ever it was at the time. The lock holds as long as that particular roll is running. When you stop the ISO goes back to auto... interesting but not in the book that I know of.

I'm green... I'd love to have a 60D... have loads of fun!

I also have this book, bought it at Barnes and Noble. Am 3/4 ways through it and constantly go back to it for detailed information, even though I have the .pdf version of the manual on my computer for easy access. Hey speaking of Syracuse, I'm also a transplant, to Tucson AZ. Lived 56 years in Fulton, Village of Phoenix and finally Liverpool, N.Y. I also left for economic reasons 8 years ago. Now Retired. Don't miss driving and clearing snow everyday from my vehicles though. Still SU fan..... Go Orange!!
