I'm fairly new to Phoenix and looking for others who would want to get together and go photo stuff. Open to just about anything.

Hit me up and we can get together over coffee or ??? to discuss future adventures.

I dont live in Phx...but I suggest a few options...join meetup.com. I did a quick check and saw over 25 different groups. I also suggest looking up Phoenix area camera clubs. Again, a quick look and I saw a few that had field trips, etc. I think the Phoenix Camera club is over 90 years old...nice web site.

Not only do camera clubs go on field trips, I found that the education and photo critique are central to my getting better at this craft.

Oh my. Another tour group. I can't think of a better way to not get the pictures I want. Beside all the arguments of where to stay and eat.

I do not partake of field trips or meet up. Not my thing. I can say that my photo club does excellent field trips to places like Death Valley led by an amazing photographer who has deep expertise on the area. They have other field trips as well. I have not hear about any controversies over lunch or much else. But the OP asked and I provided two possible solutions. Perhaps you can provide some other recommendations?

Yep. Meet up at your favorite coffee house/bar/cafe and talk about photography as long as you can stand it. Then go on you own and take some of the really great photos you can get by spending only a few hours on 3 or 4. Works well for me. Except the meet and talk part. But I'm not (as all have by now obviously decided) a people person. The 3 secrets for success; solitude, solitude, solitude.

I do not know any but that sounds like fun in the Phoenix area.
There is so much right in the metro area that would take years to explore let alone in the larger area.
Hope you find a good bunch who intimately know the area as most everyone seem to miss amazing opportunities in the area for awesome photos.

Is it just me, or are we getting more and more snarky responses to legitimate questions on this forum? Why not just ignore the question if you don’t have any constructive input?

It's not just you. It's looking more and more like this is a site for GOM who don't have anything better to do than put in their 2 cents.

I just thought of something. You are about to enter monsoon season. There are photogs who specialize in capturing those dramatic scenes. I know one from California who leads trips there. I assume there are a bunch in Phoenix/Scottsdale area. I strongly suggest you link up with one of them for an incredible photo journey.

I also know about your wild horse on the Salt River. There are tours that try to capture them hanging out in the water. Another very cool photo op.

We had a condo on Scottsdale a few years ago. I love the desert and can easily find photo ops around there. There has to be really good groups as well to go with.

You're probably referring to me. And probably missing the point. One doesn't not take really good pictures in a group setting. (Unless you're taking group pictures). And you feel compelled to operate at the group pace. I have no problem with discussing techniques, opportunities, and equipment - just not where I'm trying to take photographs. Else why would I be on this site? Some very good advise has come my way from here, and I thank the contributors for it. And, if you have the herd instinct, or don't like solitude, go with it.

Opinions on the benefit of meet ups and groups was not the question posed by the Op. So your response was not on point. The other thing is that, for some, photography is also a social thing. Covid made us all shut ins of many of us.

Finally I disagree with your notion that good photographs cannot be made in groups. In my club we have many accomplished and published photographers who lead trips. The work that comes out of those events are vastly superior to most of what I see on this forum. Their air show photos and Death Valley photos are excellent.

Like you I don’t relish going in groups simply because i need to take photographs of things that I am experiencing or are meaningful to me. If you were to look at my pics on my site you’d see mostly travel related shots that I experienced. Hopefully unique.

But why dampen someone’s desire to spend time with others doing photography?

Cahale did not answer "jaylubers" question about hooking up with folks in the Phoenix area with an interest in photography. No the question Cahale appeared to answer was "What do you guys think about photographic groups?" None of us know the personal situation of most other folks on this group. I suspect that for many people this group is as much a way to have a connection with fellow human beings as it is to stay updated on photographic matters. Similarly being in a photographic group ( or any group with people with similar interests) can be as much about the camaraderie as it is about the photography or whatever it is the group is about. Jayluber, I wish you the best in your quest to find some fellow travellers.
