Into the Glacier Iceland excursion

We are doing a self drive tour of Iceland. The ‘Into the Glacier’ tour is recommended. It is a visit inside a manmade tunnel into a glacier. Has anyone done this tour? 4 hours. $175. There is sooo much to see—-is this worth the time? Any recommendations for off the beaten path but pretty accessible sites would be appreciated. 2 weeks is clearly not enough time! Thanks.

In the north, Ásbyrgi is a nice, little-ish dead end canyon with small lake and dripping water. Ásbyrgi also has a mesa nearly the shape of the canyon.

Thanks! I read about that area. Looks beautiful. I have it on the list of stops. There are so many ‘must see’ sights, but I want to include some off the beaten track too. Thanks.

No ice caves this time of year but if this is anything like that it will be spectacular. Wide angle zoom like a 16-35 if you have one and a tripod, cloth to wipe your lens, rain cover

Into the Glacier is a manmade tunnel into the ice, almost like a mine. No cool formations. Just solid blue ice walls.
Thanks for the photo tips. I’m a novice so fear my skills won’t do the waterfalls, etc, justice. Almost postponed the trip but not getting any younger!

Go to the Perlman Museum in Rejkavic has simulated glacier tunnel plus much more. Stay at City Center Hotel. Golden Circle. Blue Lagoon. Tomato Greenhouse(Fridheimar) Southern most city of Vic and Puffin Hotel. Glacier Lake. Giant waterfall. Most Northern point and lighthouse. Northern Lights Hotel. Great rooms and food. One of my most memorable trips. Great phone service if you use tmobile.

The big church in Reykjavik (vik = port in Icelandic) is made to look like the basalt columns you see around the country. Black sand beach in the south is nice, more basalt columns and decomposing lava all around. Along the ring road, also in the south there is a stop at the remains of a long bridge washed out by melting glacier via volcanic activity. Akureyri also has a nice church, on a hill. And all the stoplights are hearts ❤

If you like waterfalls there are several not far from Reykjavik. I took the staircases to the top of all that had them. Gullfoss Falls was my favorite. If you go there take the time to go on all the trails, especially the lowest one and go to the end, it's spectacular. You can drive to the lower parking lot if you don't want to walk down.
We flew nonstop from Seattle to Reykjavik on Icelandair Air with legroom in coach like we had in the good old days of flying. They also had free pillows and blankets.
Food not that great and expensive. Everyone under 60 speaks perfect English, and very friendly. Don't speed, they have speed cameras and you'll get an expensive ticket later. Locals seem to get away with it, but not worth the chance. My brother-in-law got one on way to Black Sand Beach after they returned home. He warned us.
We loved Iceland. So much to see. Loved all the moss. There is also a thermal area like a mini Yellowstone. And of course visit Blue Lagoon.

Great suggestions. Thanks. I read the Blue Lagoon is jammed with tourists. We may visit other pools since we are touring the whole island.

In addition to the Blue Lagoon, there are hot springs and baths all over Iceland. I found this one about 10 km southwest of Hofn. Out in the middle of nowhere, 10 isk admission (honor system), nice changing room. about 6 small pools set into the ground, each one a slightly different temperature. I spent a relaxing hour there, all alone except for my wife.
