Our printer/ scanner just died. Any recommendations that are in the under $400 range. I don’t print a lot of photos but would like to be able to print some up to 8x10, but it is not the main reason for the printer. Also, we had an HP laser jet. We went laser jet as we did not print often enough and ink printers dried up and it was soo expensive to replace just because they dried up… Have they improved to the point where they don’t dry out if you are not a frequent printer?

Thanks! Beth

Most printers use not 8 x 10 but 8 1/2 x 11
I bought after waiting for 4 months epson EP 8550 WAS expensive 850 but ink tanks not cartagena and can print lab quality 13 x 19. I'll never do that size but I'll use 11 x14 for sure. The price jumped $100 while waiting. Watch some are just printers not scanners copy. EP8500 is hundred less

As for drying up, almost all will if not used to keep the head clean. NOT just printing B&W documents.
I try to print something in color once or twice a month, even if just a test page which exercises all colors.

I've been using a Canon TR8520 all-in-one for a couple of years now. It meets my needs. It will print up to 8x12 photos. (I have Costco print 99% of my printed photos on photographic paper. Saves ink.)

I had a Canon something photo printer some years back. Total pain. Now I have an B&W HP laser jet printer, and if I need a photo printed I'll send it out.

Nearly six years ago, I bought the cheapest all-in-one printer/scanner/copier I could find - that was decent, and have been using it ever since. Sometimes I print many pages or many prints, and sometimes there are long periods of time where I don't use it for anything. I've never had the head clog up or refuse to print, and the quality always has been good. The printer is a Canon E510. I don't know whether it makes a difference or not, but I always use Canon ink cartridges. I have been very pleased with the performance of this printer!

In the US, before I moved to the Philippines a bit over six years ago, ink tanks were just becoming available to convert standard cartridge printers - for convenience and economy. This was before any of the printer manufacturers had added them to their line. I bought one such unit and used it quite satisfactorily for a couple of years before moving over here, but did not bring it with me. My volume of printing/copying is quite low, such that I do not need the tank capability. (In the US, I printed a lot.)

I use an Epson 440 and have no problem with dry cartridges and I don’t print much either. I have a desktop folder with a few photos in it and print one every once in a while on plain paper and low quality.

Just an FYI--Recently bought a Brother laser printer only, no scanning, HL-L2325DW. Has worked fine, relatively inexpensive. Do use a usb cable between printer and computer. Wireless too much effort. Toner cartridge supposedly will last a long time without drying out.

I bought a Canon TR8620 some time back. It works like a champ. Does excellent 8x10 pictures and prints normal stuff pretty fast. The previous printer was a Canon MG6220. It worked very hard because at the time I was working as a bookkeeper and had to do individual reports and payroll checks. All of a sudden it started saying there was a problem and wouldn't print, but the scanner still works. Found out later that there's a "used ink receptacle" and when it's full, the printer stops printing! It's no longer made, but similar models are still available. My only complaint with either of these was the size of the paper cartridge. They don't hold much. They do have a straight paper path available for photo paper, so that's a big plus.

How is it to much effort??

Our desktop defaults to wired, our laptops default to WIFI.
The desktop can use either wired or WIFI, but wired is a bit faster.
Using WIFI from the laptops does not require the desktop to be running.
Each application can "pick a printer" from a list if needed, like even a PDF Writer.

It was just a pain in the arse to go wireless versus using the cable. As I recall using the cable was in effect an automatic connection and the wireless required some software download and wi-fi falderal. Plus you factor-in Murphy's Law, and the fact I am old and lazy (not necessarily in that order) and it was no contest to choose the usb route. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

My Canon printer kinda self installed, gave me options to install "icons" (printing devices) for both wired and WIFI.
Yea, a few extra steps are required.
(I'm not a spring chicken either, but I use computers a lot.)

The Epson ET-2760 is an all-in-one that uses the ink tanks system. I've printed almost 4,000 pages, and the ink levels are just a shade below half full. I foolishly bought a stand-by set of ink for $68, but I don't know if I'll ever need it.

Only four left at Amazon for $258
