Here are two "Must-Googles": Tesla crash in Manhattan; Electric bus fires.

Wow... doesn’t make you want a battery powered vehicle (or a hybrid) or to ride in an electric bus.

Reports are confusing on Tesla driver, saying no occupants... and ... saying driver OK. Reported 70 MPH and video shows fast... was the self-driving Tesla “going home” quickly... maybe to get a paying passenger?

Both are definitely bad.

I expect we'll see lots of negative stories about Tesla in the near term.

Tesla will now be a target due to Elon Musk owning it. No surprise and very predictable.

There have been loads of negative stories about Tesla, largely concerning repair costs.

UL labs has done extensive testing on the batteries that both hybrids use and all electric vehicles such as Tesla and the conclusion is don’t charge your electric car in your garage as these batteries can catch on fire and will burn your house and garage down to the ground as water can not put the fire out created by a lithium ion battery example being a few years ago a warehouse in Morris Illinois was store all kinds of lithium ion batteries and it fought on fire it burned for two weeks until they put sand and cement on the fire to put it out.
Hybrid cars can have the same disastrous effect but the probability is 90% less likely to happen due to not plugged into a charger, these are problems that no one hears about but they are out here.

Something to ponder: “Hybrid-powered cars were involved in about 3,475 fires per every 100,000 sold. Gasoline-powered cars, about 1,530. Electric vehicles (EVs) saw just 25 fires per 100,000 sold.”

We really have to find an alternative to lithium batteries. Besides the scarcity of lithium, the fire hazard is too great to overlook.

Just curious - why will Tesla NOW be a target?

Musk started Tesla and has owned it (with some partners I believe) since inception. Of course, after going public, he owns less of the whole.

I retired from the volunteer fire department in our town about the time hybrids were becoming popular and more common. Big changes in the typical response training to car fires—water a no-no. We joked about adding a dump truck full of sand to the equipment bay.
Personally not ready for fully electric car.

At this point in EV & Hybrid development, I wouldn’t have either.
I drive to and from Florida.
What am I supposed to do while the EV need’s charging?
I’ve heard EVs cost more in electricity than gasoline to run. (Maybe not with gas prices up like they are now.)
My Subaru Legacy gets over 30 mpg on the trip to and from FL.
I’m looking into replacing my older 2013 Impreza with a Crosstrek. I checked out the Crosstrek” Hybrid. It’s about $10,000 more and will give you a whopping 17 extra miles in Hybrid mode.
I’ll wait.

*my statements above may not be totally accurate, especially the extra $10,000 for the Hybrid model, and the gasoline versus electric.

Shopping!

When my son and I were looking for new cars, I figured the cost of a Fit vs the cost of a Prius. We both get over 40 MPG with our Fits, and it would take way too long to break even, let alone come out ahead.

Shopping? On a trip to Florida?
My son in law is on his second Prius. The first one was totaled by a woman who broadsided him so he had to buy another car. He commutes to Fordham from Nassau County so he needs the most economy he can get.
He has a new Prius. I’m not that familiar with Priuses but I’m sure the old one was Hybrid. The new one he plugs in so I don’t know if it’s a Hybrid or EV.
Fortunately, he recharges it outside because he keeps his antique Jeep in his garage.
That’s an instance where the Hybrid/EV would probably be the most useful especially since gas is just under $5 a gallon.

The push for electric vehicles is too hard and too early. There is much needed before the country can truly accept and use them. The need for charging stations, rapid charging, safety (the fires are only an example), the cost, the recycling of the used batteries and I am sure there are many more reasons to take time to insure everything is properly prepared.
