How did I do that?

PhotoShop is changing on me, and I'm sure it is something I did, but I don't know what I've done.

For years, the Lasso tool selected things, unless I used the Option key (a Mac), and then it de-selected. A few months ago, it changed: the default was something like moving the image under the previous selection; using the shift key got it to select, and the Option key got it to deselect. The cursor changed too: the default was a lasso and arrow with a square, the shift changed the square to a plus, and the Option changed it to a minus. I chalked it up to an upgrade. Suddenly, in the middle of processing an image just now, it's back to the old form.

Also for years, the crop tool would create a crop selection around the whole image if I dragged it from one corner to the opposite corner. The cursor was a lasso with a tic-tac-toe symbol. Then, a few months ago, it changed: selecting the crop tool would give a different cursor, and clicking it next to the image selected the entire image for cropping; the cursor, when brought near to the image, became a curved line with an arrow head at each end. I chalked it up to the upgrade. Suddenly, in the middle of processing an image just now, it's back to the old form.

I think it is clear that I did something to cause the changes just now, and I'd love to learn just what the devil it was. I prefer the old (and current) lasso, but I prefer the intermediate crop tool.

I’m looking forward to the replies as I don’t know the answer! You may need to tell us what version you’re working in. I use 2021 at present and the lasso makes a selection, to add to it hold the shift down and to subtract hold the option key. You can use this method to add or subtract from selections made by other tools such as ‘object selection’, which is very convenient at times.

Yeah, that's happened to me, too.... try hitting your "tab" key - maybe it was the caps-lock key.... one of those. I'm not at my computer right now so can't confirm... but, give 'em a try..

I generally update a few days after a new version becomes available, so I'm working with the latest.

My lasso worked as you've described it, for several months until yesterday afternoon, when it reverted to what I'd been used to, adding a selection by default (no extra keys), and subtracting with Option.

Well, usually there is a provision to use the legacy version of a tool before they changed it. I know this is true of the crop tool and the behavior with the Shift key. Look in the Options bar.

Thanks! It took me a while to find it, but in the Options bar after selecting the crop tool, I clicked the gear symbol, and clicked off "Use Classic Mode," and now the whole image is shown as cropped when I select the crop tool, as I prefer, and the lasso tool is unchanged and still selects by default without any keys used, as I prefer.

So, I still have no idea how I changed things in the middle of working with an image yesterday - I don't recall ever touching that gear symbol in the Options bar - but "How I did it" seems much less important now that I've fixed it.

Thanks again.
