In Merlin, OR, we are too far west to really see it. Plus when the lunar eclipse starts, at 20:39 local, both the elevation, of 0.5 deg, and the direction, 117 deg, put it behind tall trees. So I shall wait to see what others capture!

“ Total ‘Blood Moon’ eclipse to rise over US this weekend
The moon will plunge into darkness this weekend to create a celestial spectacle that has not been seen in the sky over the entire contiguous United States since the turn of the decade.”

Suggestions as to how to capture?

This was taken last night just before the full eclipse. D500, 600mm f/4G, 1.4X III teleconverter (effective 1260mm f/5.6), tripod, gear head, remote trigger shooting raw with white balance set to daylight. Took 9 images at 10fps, ISO 51200, f/5.6, 1/80 sec. Took the set in PS, manually aligned them, averaged them together for the result you see above. No color editing at all, no sharpening at all. I will continue to play as I know I can get a better result, but wanted to post here with minimal processing.

Just before the eclipse started my settings were ISO 800, f/8, 1/1000 sec. A huge difference in dynamic range.

Your photograph is magical, just magical! And you think you can improve on that?

Great job! Please post an update once you're "done" with editing. :-)

Just outstanding! I would like to arrange printing the photograph at our local Staples for my own pleasure. Presumably you, Dr. Nikon, and Strodav don’t have a problem with that? Send me a PM with your answer.
