As the weather gets nicer, there are more bikes on the roads. Going into town today, I passed two of them - riding electric bikes. Why? For the exercise? Traffic on these two-lane roads is moving at between 40 and 55 mph, at least. That doesn't sound like fun.

It looks like a lot of fun. I would buy one but there are few places around here to actually ride one except for the roads, and I do not have a death wish. Some people ride them on the beach at low tide, but I don't know about getting the sand out of the gears, chain, bearings, sprockets, etc... It just doesn't sound like a good plan. Many of them are fat-tire all-terrain bicycles - I would love to take one out west to ride on some of the mountain roads or on the roads of Canyonlands or Arches National Parks. They have a 20-40 mile range (more if you just use the motor in assist mode, and you can always just pedal if the battery runs down). I think there was a ruling that you can ride them on federal land anywhere that regular bicycles go. Some bike paths elsewhere restrict motorized vehicles, including e-bikes. Definitely good for old folks like many of us with worn-out knees.

I converted my daughter's 21 speed bike to electric front wheel drive with a Bafang kit. I safely rode it for a couple of years until I started having health issues (balance). It was the very best exercise I've ever done. I kept the unit in "pedal assist" mode, it really helped with hills and grades. My balance issues continued to worsen so I purchased an adult tricycle and I still tipped it over. The great physicians at the Cleveland Clinic attribute my problems to a massive cerebral hemorrhage I suffered 19 years ago. I miss my daughter's bicycle but I am grateful to be alive.

Our first trip to Bermuda was in 1967, and we rented bikes. They had a small gasoline engine that dropped down onto the front wheel. You had to get it moving a bit before the engine would start. They didn't offer helmets back then. In later years, they offered proper motor scooters - and helmets.

If you count the number of impact incidents on the guardrails along the roadway, you will soon understand why I enjoy riding my bicycle on the farm roads where there is very little traffic.

my mom had a three wheeler with two wheels in back, she kept tipping it so we bought her one that had the two wheels in front instead, game changer, that was before assist motors were a thing, I'm sure she would have like the assist

Here's my e-bike. It has 5 levels of pedal assist, 6 speed Shimano SIS chain system, and a really nice LCD screen that shows speed, pedal assist level, mileage, and battery level. The bike also has disc brakes for quick stopping.
I mostly use pedal assist as there are a lot of hills where I live and it really helps with those.

Even in my 50’s my pedal bikes were capable of 40 mph. See many more E-bikes on the single tracks in the mountains these days. The high end units sell north of $12,000.

Bikers in my neighborhood run stop signs and lights. One of them ran into my car several years ago. Had to take him to court to get reimbursed for the damage he caused.

Mine has one front wheel. If I run across a two-in-the-front I'll try it. Even without the assist it is so enjoyable to ride around our quiet little neighborhood.
