Windows 10 updated yesterday and now no matter what I do I have been unable to download new photos from a Z5. I have changed nothing and as far as I can tell all the settings are correct. Anyone else have problems after this Windows update?

How do you download your photos? What software are you using? I just use the Windows Explorer file manager.
I have always just downloaded to the Windows Photo and then once I see full screen pictures decide what is worth saving and putting into Photoshop Elements. The problem, I think, is that after the update while the camera still shows in devices and as far as I can see all settings seem okay, the computer is not recognizing the camera.
Calling it quits for the evening. Will tackle it again tomorrow.

Copy and paste to my folder I make.
Has worked wonderfully for decades with no problems ever.
Not sure how you are trying to download but this is a 100% sure way.

They screw up something new in Windows Photo every time there's any sort of update that affects it. I thought it was going to turn into my favorite photo software when first introduced but MS has botched it again, as usual. I still use it to search, but little else. Before that, it was Picasa disappearing. Now I've finally learned that I need to know how the sausage is made and I do it in Windows Explorer as others stated. I open two Explorer windows and open my SD card in one. In the other window, I open my pictures folder on my D drive which is organized into date folders. I create a new folder for today in the proper month folder inside the proper year folder and just drag from the SD card into today's date on the D drive. One caution... if you use several cameras in one day like I do, make sure their sequence numbers aren't duplicated. You can give each camera a different prefix to avoid that problem.
Could it be that the update regressed the Raw codecs to an earlier one that doesn't recognize the files? You may need to g o to the MS Store and get the file for the raw codecs. It is free and without ads.

I allow Windows 10 to update regularly - without any problems having been evidenced to date. The only "problem" I have with transferring picture files to my hard drive (SSD or mechanical) is in choosing which one to use of the many means available.

I pretty much do the same but lately I have been copying to an external. Cull & delete. I'll decide later which ones to bring into LR. Win 10 updated 5/12 & moved pictures in yesterday-5/13 with no problem.

Way back more than a few years ago I used Picasa and once installed, it automatically found and organized every photo on my computer, much like you are describing, using the YYYY-MM-DD format. Then I would add a brief description for each file. Picassa set me up for photography file management success. I still have Picasa on my computer and I still use it for some very special Picasa functions which I like. Now I have moved on to other programs including the Topaz Products and I use the same method that you describe below. Thank you for sharing.
"I open my pictures folder on my D drive which is organized into date folders. I create a new folder for today in the proper month folder inside the proper year folder and just drag from the SD card into today's date on the D drive."
Now when I desire to use one of the Picasa special features after downloading the new pic files, as described above, I open Picasa and it still automatically updates itself so that the files which it presents to me look exactly like what I see using my other programs. Picasa may be gone, but several key features live on, and still make me,

Edit: Picasa also presents Exif Data for each file.

I had this problem months ago after a win10 update. Turned out Win disabled the SMB1 protocol in order to replace it with the SMB2 protocol. Unfortunately on my machine it disabled one w/o installing the new one. Result was my SD card was not recognized. No error message either until I tried to read my card in my printer, which gave me the error message that led to the solution. Here is my post on the issue, and further down I supply a link to the fix. I had no idea what the SMB1 or 2 protocol was, but learned with some effort that was the culprit. Good Luck:

It is possible that your camera has setting for USB connection type. You need to set connection type to something like "data transfer" or "mass storage".
Both - my camera and my phone - require this setting before transfer is possible.

....
Some programmers/developers will use hooks into Windows functions, a shortcut to save development time. If Microsoft alters that function in the OS, the program based on how that function
used to work, may or may not still work as intended. I've seen a lot of stuff like that happen over the years.
And unfortunately, it is conceived as "Windows screwed up"......

Yes! I would use a card reader and no software just the windows explorer to move the files from the SD card to the computer. If I don't use the card reader and connect the camera directly to the computer I would set the camera as "mass storage" and the computer would consider the camera as a drive. I wouldn't use any software to do the transfer.

Don’t use Windows Photo, close it when it opens and use File Explorer instead. I hate Photos. It thinks it knows what I want it to do.

File Explorer 100% of the time for me, from the card.
