If you want not crowded at all, then definitely Gateway to the Arctic NP.

A friend just went to Smokey Mountain, said it's not crowded.

Do you mean Smokey Mountain National Park (not too far), or is there another Smokey Mountain?

Just got back from Big Bend. Spectacular landscapes, hardly anyone else there. I was with a motorcycle group so did not get much opportunity for photography but it is well worth the trip for photographers. I recommend going in the spring or fall. Summer and winter can both be brutal there.

Right about the summer & winter. My wife, I, & friends made a number of horse camping trips to Big Bend NP in the 70’s & 80’s. Usually went in March or April each year. But, decided one year we would like to go in January for some different photography. Started watching the wx. Thanksgiving was 80 degrees, Christmas was 80. So, thought we would go in Jan. When we got there wx was ok (mid 60’s/day, 35-45 nites). On the 3rd day decided we would camp at Glenn Springs for several days. Takes about an hour to pull horse trailers 8 miles to the Springs. First nite, arctic front came in . Temp went to 15 degrees, 30 degrees next day high. Couldn’t move as back country road was iced over. 2nd day temps got back to normal; we moved to another location. 2 nites later went to 18 degrees with another arctic cold front, then back to reasonable temp. the next day. Ok for a couple of days. 3rd day left for home; left park at 72 degrees. By Fort Stocton, 80 miles north, it was in the 30’s. Back then wx reports in Big Bend were very erratic & unpredictable. After that went back to late March or early April for our trips there. Even then temps hit 102 in the desert one day, but mostly pleasant after that as it was in other years at that time of year when we went again each year. Moral: be prepared for any kind of weather there. Beautiful country! Many more trips there over the years. Suggest not going there during college spring break; not bad, just busy.

I know you had great intentions in posting that list but now those parks will be ruined like the other overcrowded parks that have been loved to death.

A bit exaggeratedly pessimistic perhaps? Last year the National Park Service received 297 million recreation visits, up 60 million visits (25.3%) from 2020. UHH has slightly more than 100,000 members, so even if all visited these parks it would be a drop in the bucket!

Great Smokey Mountains National Park is actually the most-visited park in the NPS system.

Your friend obviously did not go there in the Fall.

If you want to really get off the beaten track, try this website that lists all the state parks, monuments, and forests.

Great link, thanks. I didn't know there was one place you could go for all 50 states.

But one might want to check a state-specific listing too. For example the listing at this site for Maine omits the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument.

Just left Great Basin NP. Nobody there. The caves were magnificent. Stayed in Baker NV at the Whispering Elms RV Park. Can camp in the NP but no hook up for trailers. My lovely bride would not allow that,

I notice that it says there are more state parks than they list. I guess you have to go to each state to find it. It was worth a try.

The British online publication Nature TTL recently posted an international take on landscape photography destinations in the US which are less crowded than some more popular locations.

The USA may not be the number one place on your list for incredible landscapes, but she sure does have some magnificent spots. With 62 national parks, photographers flock to these locations, camera in hand, ready to capture that epic light. Sure, we all want those iconic photos of Half Dome at sunset or Mesa Arch glowing at sunrise, but is it worth battling the crowds to get “just another” photo of that location?

There are so many hidden gems out there within the States that I’ve decided to put together a list of my favourite hidden gems. These spots are usually far less visited, crowded and photographed then the popular areas, so if you’re looking for some diversity, give these locations for landscape photography in the USA a look!

1. White Sands National Park, New Mexico
2. Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah
3. Badlands National Park, South Dakota
4. Alabama Hills, California
5. Death Valley National Park, California/Nevada
6. White Pocket, Arizona
7. Caddo Lake, Texas
8. Big Bend National Park, Texas
