A poor guy in MA is getting the runaround from both Apple and FedEx over the exchange of an Apple watch. Apple claims that it never received the defective watch, so it charged the customer a second time for the watch. Naturally, that meant hours on the phone with both companies.

Lots online about it - https://www.google.com/search?q=apple+and+fedex+over+apple+watch&oq=apple+and+fedex+over+apple+watch&aqs=edge..69i57j0i546.8319j0j4&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

Where I live FedEx Gound always leave the deliveries right by the apartment door entrance. These deliveries even if you have to sign for them are also left there. I have had over $1,500 worth of merchandise stolen as a result of FedEx not leaving it at the apartment front door. FedEx management was told of these problems, and they have done nothing to resolve this issue. Drivers tell us they were told to leave deliveries at the apartment front door and will pay the dollar amount when the claims are filed. What kind of business management is this anyway?

B-school is not enough to launch a management career.

But it gets you in as a worker bee so you can work your way up. And still no experience of direct contact or knowledge of customers and how to deal with them.

In this case the failure to deliver to door and leaving at the entry way of the apartment building is probably driven by a time per delivery chart for the driver - literally no time in the schedule to do anything else.

I worked for a large supermarket chain while in college and my first few years as a teacher (weekends and summers of course). The company hired a consultant to "improve efficiency". No allowance for customer hunting for wallet or check book, hunting for coupons, price checks etc. etc. We had one cashier who was so fast that on a really big order it took two baggers to keep up with her and the best she ever scored on that thing was 85%. This was on the older keyed only cash registers - no scanners until a couple of months before I stopped working there when I got far enough up the teaching pay scale I didn't need the second job. And the conveyor belt only took the items from the register to the bagger - cashier had to take them out of the cart and ring them up. On the 10 items or less express line they expected the cashier to do over 100 customers per hour to score 100%.

Customer service has hit the new low of automated checkout. I'm a devoted computer nerd, but I would NEVER foist an automated checkout system on consumers. They are entirely infuriating, since there are no standards. Every store has a different idea of how to set them up. And seemingly, they require human intervention every time I use one.

It's like minimum wage jobs... counter productive. If you take care of customers, they take care of you. If you pay a living wage, workers will take care of the company. So many B-school robots don't get that.

My kids have all worked in grocery stores (Whole Foods and Fresh Market). They are incompetently run, with little to no training and ridiculous demands. Those two chains do pay well, but when an untrained worker is paid well, customers and management lose, and the worker quits out of disgust. All three of my kids gave up on them in despair.

The best thing I got out of the Market (Ralphs Markets) was my wife.

First she was coming in as a customer since her family lived less than a block away. Then she got a job as a trainee clerk. Being a Tom Boy she also helped the night crew bring out the day's delivery and prepare the stock for the morning crew to price and put on the shelves.

Often the "Midnight Shift" made up of high school and college students would go out to a 24 hr place like Denny's for a very early breakfast and one Saturday night she asked if she could come with us. I gave her a ride home to change and then took her to that night's place. The rest of the crew never showed up, they went somewhere else leaving the two of us on a "date". The next day they told me it was a setup. They saw the way the two of us looked at each other and "We knew you would never get up the nerve to ask for a date so we planned the whole thing." Later one of those guys was our best man and two others also took part in the wedding.
