For the second time, scientists have produced an image of a black hole, the one at the center of our galaxy. There is lots of info on YouTube and elsewhere. It's located 25,800 light years from earth, so the picture is a bit blurry. Stars are circling it at up to 24,000,000 MPH.

SO!?!?!?! You're mirrorless now, boost the ISO, stand steady and get'er SHARP!

I think this is just the beginning of what the JWST will bring us.
Thanks, Jerry

Nat Geo has an article about that.

Yes, the current thinking is that there is probably a black hole at the center of many, maybe, most galaxies!
Nearly 26,000 light years!!! to the center of our galaxy!!! And that's our neighborhood!!! It all boogles the mind, at least mine!!!

And to think it "only" took a radio telescope system basically spread across half the world and then 5 years of analysis to turn the many petrabytes of data into a wonderful image. It is an absolute wow!! Yes the JWST will be the next major breakthrough. When I look through my 8" DOB and my Unistellar telescope/imager I'm certainly at least a bit envious The universe is indeed incredible.

Most black holes I’m familiar with are potholes. 😱😱😱

And a ditto from me. The universe is beyond being vast. Planet Earth is 4.6 billion years old. We have had an oxygen atmosphere for over 2 billion years. And one can hardly comprehend the distances involved. Just try multiplying 26,000 by the distance light travels in a year! I have just finished Richard Dawkins book Evolution; what a read. (And something over 40% of Americans think the planet is just 10,000 years old!) The truth is that there is no God.

Right. And how did they compute that data from all over the world? They transported hard drives from all the telescopes to one central processing location.

I didn’t know we were that close to the center of our galaxy. I thought we were some distance out in one of the spiral arms. I guess we’ll be gobbled up by that Black Hole sooner than I expected 😩

I once thought I had captured an image of a block hole. But, I had just forgotten to remove the lens cap.

I agree.
When I was a kid I used to lay on the ground in an open field, stare at the stars, and imagine the concept of infinity. You travel as far as you possibly can and then..... you go more.
And you repeat this forever.
You would think there has to be and end somewhere.

Looks like they took the photo with the same camera that they use to take pictures of the UFOs that visit the earth.

I always thought that a "black hole" was something that we threw camera, boat, and ukulele money into for it disappears and we never get it back.
