Anyone want to speculate on Nikon's D850's future?

It's discounted $500 this Mother's day sale, and no other product in their lineup is discounted as much this time around. I know that no one except Nikon knows the truth about this, but it seems not out of the realm of possibility that they're dumping their inventory in advance of discontinuing the camera. It's a fine camera and probably worth the sale price, but it's stuck in 2017.

It'll get the same treatment that every other camera they've ever made has gotten; it'll be replaced by something Nikon thinks will sell better.

D850s may be stuck in 2017, but that is a great place to be stuck as a DSLR. I trust my D850 over any of the mirrorless cameras I own! It is big, it is heavy, it is responsive, and it delivers for me. There is nothing magic about mirrorless cameras; they are energy (battery) hogs. Newer doesn't mean better.

A D850 is plenty good enough in the right hands!

There is something strange. B&H sells the open box one for more than the new one.

I own a D850. I don't believe that there is any camera in their lineup that is better for landscapes and family related photos. The IQ is stunning. On the other hand, if your goal is BIF or other action photos, the faster frame rates of their mirrorless cameras (especially the Z9) offer some advantages. Also, the D850 is woefully inadequate for video. Unless you use fixed focus, it continuously hunts when following moving subjects. The contrast detection focus with the mirror up just sucks. The fact that you can't use a viewfinder when taking video means holding the camera away from your body to see the scene you're filming, and I have found this to be less stable than using a camera or camcorder with a viewfinder that is held to your face with your arms braced against your body. This is what being stuck in 2017 means.

Nikon is clearly moving into the mirrorless space. I bought my copy about 18 months ago, the first time it had ever gone on sale. I would say the D500 would probably go on sale as well, but it has already been dis-continued. Again, to the march of the mirrorless.
At this time, I won't be making the switch. I'm happy with my dream combo of the D850 and D500. And they are paid for.

Maybe because it's been inspected more times?

Nikon discontinued making film cameras, so there is no reason to think they won’t eventually discontinue DSLRs. And sometime in the future discontinue mirrorless for something else.

You're right, of course. I think that DSLR's are going away sooner rather than later, and one of the reasons I posted that a sale is going on is to make people aware of it. In spite of the video shortcomings, it's a fantastic camera, and anyone wanting one might consider getting one on sale now before it's too late.

I've had my D850 since 2018, and have not one complaint about it. I got notification about the sale from NikonUSA, and have been thinking about ordering a second one. My thinking is that while I love my D850, my two D500s are really my "heavy use" cameras, and the D850 fills special needs and requirements. What its video can't do isn't anything I need done. Probably if my needs change, the smart thing would be to buy a dedicated video camera instead of a second D850. Whining would probably not solve anything.

There will never be a better DSLR than those you can still buy today.

That is true so it's the time to buy the DSLR.
