Hi. My name is Peggy.
I live in Central Pennsylvania. I live on a farm.
I like making jewelry, drawing, gardening and reading.
I'm 57 years old and looking for a new hobby.
I love a lot of the pictures I've taken with my phone and would like to try my hand at some serious photography. Looking for some information on what type of camera would be a good choice for a beginner.

Peggy, the best advice is to get the best you can afford. The brand is insignificant, as they all perform well. The idea is to avoid limiting your development by purchasing a camera with limited capabilities. One that has an interchangeable lens, one that allows for manual adjustment of ISO, shutter speed, and aperture will allow you to learn and apply your knowledge and developing skills to their utmost.

Welcome to the forum Peggy. You won’t find that people on the forum are shy of making suggestions. I use Olympus/OM Systems equipment and love it.
Good luck in making your choice.

Welcome to UHH from another central PA member.
The one recommendation is look at a system as a whole where backward compatibility goes back about 35 years so as you run across smoking good deals on lenses you can be assured that they will will work 100% with your camera. An adapter might be needed but it will in no way affect the 100% compatibility and operatibility of your camera and lens. Not all systems have this backward compatibility for the last 35 or so years and it can be a crap shoot when looking at a supposed good deal.
From that starting point look at your budget.
Most interchangeable lens cameras made today make great images if you do your part.
Also look at menu systems for ease of use in an intuitive way.
Finally how does it feel to you as that is big.
Have fun from here exploring.

Welcome to UHH.
All the major camera manufacturers make excellent cameras. You can’t go wrong. Go to camera stores (not the big box stores) and handle different models in your price range to see which camera feels best in your hand.

If a camera turns out to be uncomfortable in holding and controlling, you won't enjoy using it much.

Welcome to the Hog, Katt. First, decide what you will be photographing for the most part. Some cameras are better suited for some genres. The more you spend, the more capable the system will be.

Welcome to the Hog. What type of photos do think you will be taking might dictate the camera you purchase. A inter-changeable lens camera will probably give you more room for growth/options & possibly be better for close=up & macro photos which you might find an interest in considering some of your hobbies.
