Whitewater Draw in S.E. Arizona is one of many winter homes for the Sandhill Cranes.
This year they estimate aprox 40,000 Cranes are wintering in the area. this is Run by AZ Game and Fish. they have a ring of Ponds where they (as well as aprox 200 Snow Geese, Northern Shovelers, Northern Pintails, and various other birds ) spend the night for safety.
They leave the ponds at daybreak to search for food, and then return starting before noon.
It's quite a sight (and sound) to have thousands of these Cranes soar overhead as they land in nearby ponds.
I had a great time this week watching and photographing them.
It is challenging to focus on any one bird, due to the large numbers.

Beautiful work, Jim! Thanks for sharing.
Great set. I haven't seen any cranes this year where they usually congregate down here.

Hopefully they will show up for you. I saw 3 of them this summer in Minnesota
Beautiful set and beautiful birds!
Thank you for the photos. We winter part time in Tucson and I get there each year. It is hard to describe to others the sounds and takeoffs and landings if you have been there to see it in person. I appreciate the reminder. Good times.
