My Daughter and Son-in-Law overheard me talking to my wife about wanting to buy a remote weather station for our house. They surprised me at Christmas with a new weather station. They bought it at a local big box store.
I had mounted it on the house for the first couple of days to see how it worked with the wireless and discovered it needed to be a little more in the open to obtain accurate wind exposure.
Two days ago I poured a concrete base with a redwood 4x4 post and let it cure 2 days.
Today I affixed a base for the instruments to sit on, painted and attached the instruments. Voila... great real time weather via wireless on a remote display and to my cell phone. Pretty slick.
By the photos this evening you can see the weather coming in and the drop in barometric pressure. No wind today.
Thanks to my Daughter and her husband! No weather surprises. LOL

Does it run off batteries or solar power?

It does both on the wind vane. The rain gauge has 2 double A batteries. There are other modules that can be bought as well. This was sold at Costco so you can return if not happy with it.

I bought a similar 7/1 weather station at Lowe’s. Mounted the out door unit on a 10’ piece of conduit that is strapped to a yard light about 200’ away from house. It’s at my summer house on Lake Ontario. My home is not water front, I experimented before I made a permanent mount. The wind varies by 6 to 10 mph from the water front to my home.
It’s very interesting to see the weather as it is happening.

Good stuff. I think it is a good investment especially for monitoring property away. I work 60 miles from home so it is nice to know what I am driving to. Of course I can always call my wife. But she will say... just look at your phone. Now I can tell her the barometer is dropping better get the rain gear out. :)

We recently upgraded our weather station to an Ambient model from Accurite so that we could take advantage of iMac compatibility. Our home in Merlin has very local differences to even the Grants Pass weather some 15 miles from here. Indeed, differences to properties even a mile away. I put it down to the local topography.
This time the console display is situated in the living room where it is viewed frequently throughout the day!

kpmac this is good to hear. I hope this unit has a good service life. Don't know what is harder on it...rain (not that we get any) or the heat which we have plenty off. Of course I also live in a very windy location so the whirly bird may take off! :)
