Johnson & Johnson vaccine

I've received one jab of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. It is very likely that I will have to take 2 more mrna based vaccines in order to get the "boosted" status. I find this pretty annoying as more and more sources are telling me the mrna vaccines do not directly protect you from the Omicron variant. Also the booster would have to be repeated every 4 weeks.

The Johnson & Johnson vaccine however is supposed to work very well against Omicron. I can't get this vaccin in The Netherlands unless medical issues don't allow for a mrna vaccine.

What is the situation in your country? I'm not looking forward to accept 2 more vaccines that are not working very well, whilst the one vaccine that is working is not available to me...

Not having lived therefor >40 years I am not uptodate about medicine in Netherlands (maar ik ben een originele nederlandse arts Univ. Leide, and by the way: initially : van der Hal now Vanderhal :). J&J has more side effects, and less protection, the MRNA's have less side effects esp Pfizer (I dont know about AstroZeneca), and 2x vaccine + boosters protect enough against need for hospitalization and ventilation - even though the numbers of positive cultures are high overall with O-mikron. My take: take what you can get in your local doctors office : a whole lot better than getting nothing.

Ha, een landgenoot.. ; )

You will not recognize Universiteit Leiden...It has grown quite a bit, now called LUMC...(Been there too often with my mother; have to be there again in a couple of days)

I'm still hopeful J&J will become available. I did not suffer from any side effects and it did protect me very well.
(I've got two kids attending school and a wife being a teacher. Exposure to Covid has most probably taken place since my first and only vaccine.)

Vanderhala is correct. I would not get J&J (less effective/more side effects) I had Moderna 1 & 2 and 6 months later the booster. Second injection gave mild effects of a cold enough to make me not want the virus. If you had J&J your best option in an MRNA shot with a booster in (now US) 5 months. These vaccines will not totally prevent you from getting Covid but you have something like 91% better chance of not dying after vaccine.

Thanks for your advice. I'll consider a mrna vaccine.

The initial criticism about the J&J vaccine was premature though. It appeared the protection was getting better with time contrary to the mrna vaccines.

I've learned the J&J vaccine also offers a good T-cell response against Omicron.

Indeed ,anything is better than no vaccine but my preference would be a vector vaccine.
Guess I have no choice...

I just realize lots of people are still waiting for their first vaccine. I shouldn't be complaining....

Are you saying there are people who haven't been able to get the vaccine since it was introduced, or are you talking about people who just decided to get it and can't find it?

I'm talking about people that do not have access to the vaccine. Especially the continent Africa is still far behind....

I got Omicron just after getting a Pfizer booster after J&J. It wasn't fun but neither terribly serious. I would simply get what is necessary for travel and not worry.

Unfortunately the single dose J&J vaccine was never as effective as the 2-dose mRNA vaccines or the 2-dose Astra-Zeneca vaccine, and in retrospect should have been released as a 2-dose vaccine.

Current data show that recipients of single dose J&J have little to no protection against omicron disease. J&J has said that a second dose of their vaccine will provide protection against severe disease and death, however here in the U.S. the CDC has recommended getting mRNA vaccine instead. The mRNA vaccines do provide the same protection against omicron as would J&J, in the form of reduced disease severity and lowered risk of death.

I am not aware that any Covid vaccine booster is recommended every 4 weeks. Perhaps you meant to say every 4 months?

I think many folks thought that one or two shots of Covid vaccines would protect folks forever. However, Covid is mutating to now two variations that didn't exist when the vaccines were first produced.

So, it is not unreasonable that boosters are now needed and perhaps will need to be annual shots like the flu shots have been for many years.

I've read that article as well. That's why I really want the 2nd vaccination with the J&J vaccin....
Unfortunately it is not pck and choose at the moment.

I don't what roll lobbying is playing here...It wouldn't surprise me that is the reason why the MRNA vaccins are being pushed. I can live with the reasoning that J&J is easier to store and therefore more suitable for 3rd world countries.

The link you're referring to is already outdated.

It is difficult to find objective information as the interests are huge in pharmaworld.
I think it was an Israelian study that proved Pfizer has rapidly become less effective, especially against Omicron.

I 've had two shots of Astra Device and one Maderna no side effects at all and did not feel the going in in all three times.
